Fall 2020 Move-In Information

Moving In

CLICK ON ARRIVAL TIMESLOTS BELOW TO MAKE YOUR RESERVATION

We are excited to welcome you all to campus this fall. Our staff has been working hard all summer planning for your arrival. We have put together some information about what to expect during move-in along with some tips about how to be successful throughout the process. Understanding what we know about COVID-19 and the spread of the virus, we have implemented a socially distant move-in for the fall. With that we do encourage the following in order to maintain a safe and smooth transition for all students and families:

  • Please stay home if you are experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19, have a temperature of 101.3 or higher, or identify as a person of high risk for exposure
  • Pack only what you need as you will have time over Labor Day to bring more belongings if desired
  • We recommend only essentials and that you limit the number of boxes/items as you will have a limited time to move-in and we will not be able to provide any volunteers to assist with carrying your belongings
  • We will only be allowing 2 cars per student and only 2 guests to assist with move-in
  • All individuals must wear a face mask during the move-in process.
  • Download the What to Bring Checklist

In an effort to prioritize the health and safety of our community, move-in time slots will be available to lessen the number of people consistently coming into contact with one another. In staggering check-in times, University Housing is considering how many people would be in the building at a time, including elevator use.

Please note that first-year students will be focused on Monday through Wednesday and returning students will be focused on Thursday and Friday. Centennial Hall will be spread out over the 5 days.

Early Arrivals

If you are slated to move in early as part of an approved group, please DO NOT select a move-in timeslot.  Your process is different and you will not see any times listed that match your arrival dates/times.  You will receive a separate email from me with your times and instructions.  We will be breaking up groups that are moving in to adhere to social distancing guidelines.

Selecting a Timeslot

When you log in to the new housing portal via the provided link, you will be asked to select your booking.  Once you do this, you will be taken through a series of pages with important information.  All students will be required to sign an addendum for COVID19 before being able to proceed with selecting a timeslot.  You will be able to view this addendum in the portal, as well as download it to your device.  You will also receive a copy of it via email.

First-year students, before you select a timeslot you will see information about SPARK events.

Students who are not able to make the available timeslots will need to make arrangements to move in during our open move-in process, which will be on Saturday, August 15th and Sunday, August 16th.

Please make sure you sign up for a move in timeslot by Monday, August 3rd.   If you need to change your time, you will first need to cancel your selection before selecting another one.  Please click here to book your move-in appointment.  You will be directed to log in to your MyVSU.  If you are already logged in, please click on SSO Sign In to log in to your portal.  If you get an error message, please be patient and try again as many students are trying to access the system at one time.

Move-in for fall 2020 will begin at 9am on Monday, August 10th, and continue through Friday, August 14th at 8pm. Should we receive further direction from the university, the University System of Georgia, the State of Georgia, and the Centers for Disease Control, University Housing will provide updates via VSU email and on this page as they become available.

Please contact that Office of Housing and Residence Life if you have any questions.  You can email at housing@valdosta.edu or call at 229-333-5920.

  • Arrival time slots

In an effort to prioritize the health and safety of our community, move-in time slots will be available to lessen the number of people consistently coming into contact with one another. In staggering check-in times, University Housing is considering how many people would be in the building at a time, including elevator use. In addition, we ask that residents please have no more than two family members or friends to assist with move in.

To help students and their families plan for move in, the following schedule is an outline of when each building will be moving in. Please note that first year students will be focused on Monday through Wednesday and returning students will be focused on Thursday and Friday. Centennial Hall will be spread out over the 5 days.

Please see below for the move-in date and times available for your residence hall move-in. When the portal opens in mid-July, you will only be able to see your specific day/times. If your schedule does not allow for you all to make it that day, we will have instruction on who to contact to set up a different day/time outside of the published schedule so that we can best accommodate your needs and keep everyone safe.

  • Approved Early Move-In Groups

If you are part of an approved early move-in group (Greek Life, Band, Red Hots, Football, ROTC, Sullivan’s, etc), your move-in dates will be August 6th – August 9th. You will need to contact your group sponsor/coach in order to coordinate your arrival.
  • Open Move-In

AUGUST 15th and 16th: Move-in continues round-the-clock with no time slots needed. All residents must check in to their residence hall by 9 a.m. on August 17th. Please note that this move-in process will run through our 24 hour team, HEART, and your wait will depend on their availability.
  • Check-In Process

    University Center Parking Lot

August 10-14, check-in for all of the halls (except Centennial) will be in the University Center Parking Lot. You will need to have your timeslot confirmation with you in order to begin the process. Please follow all signs and directions from volunteers to make the process as smooth and safe as possible. To ensure social distancing can be followed, please do not arrive more than 30 minutes prior to your selected timeslot. Students arriving too early will be instructed to exit the parking lot and then return closer to their arrival time. Students arriving late will be moved to a holding area and fit into the process as soon as we are able to.

All students are limited to 2 vehicles during move in and may only have 2 family members or friends to assist with the move in process. We will not have move in volunteers this year, so please be mindful when packing. Masks are required to be worn by all persons during the move in process.

Everyone will remain in their vehicles for the check in process at the University Center. Cars will be separated out according to the building the student is assigned to. During check-in students will receive a packet that includes:

    · Welcome Letter

    · Schedule for the rest of the week

    · Room Key (if applicable, Reade Hall does not use physical room keys)

    · Student ID Card (new students only) programmed for your building

    · Updated COVID19 information

    · Building specific maps for unloading and parking

Returning students assigned to Hopper, Georgia, Reade or Centennial Halls - when you move in you will need to have your ID card encoded at your building. If you have lost your ID card, you will need to get a new one from the 1Card Office prior to moving into your building.

Centennial Hall residents, you will head directly to Centennial Hall for your check in process. Please arrive no more than 15 minutes prior to your selected check-in timeslot to ensure social distancing measures can be followed.

Drivers will be issued one-hour parking hang tags to unload their vehicles and then be redirected to long-term parking lots after unloading. Vehicles remaining longer than the one-hour time period will be towed at the owner’s expense. Maps with unloading zones and long-term parking locations for each area of campus will be distributed at check-in. Please follow directions outlined on your map and all signage along the streets for the arrival path to your assigned residence hall. The paths ensure that we are not causing congestion on main streets in Valdosta.

Move in Process will continue at assigned residence hall

Once you arrive to your assigned residence hall, students and their 2 guests will have 1 hour to unload their vehicle(s) and then will be asked to move their vehicle to long-term parking at Sustella Parking

Deck. You will be greeted by a volunteer who will take down contact information for drivers and given a time when your vehicle(s) must be moved.

Due to COVID19 guidelines, we will not have volunteers present to help unload items and move them to rooms. We will have some move in carts available at each building, but please note that these are also only available for an hour and we will not have enough for each student to have one. These carts will be sanitized by volunteers after each use.

Once students have unloaded and moved their vehicle(s), students and guests may remain in the room to unpack. We encourage students to consider using less decorations in their rooms this Fall. While we do not anticipate needing to close quickly as we did in the Spring, much of COVID19 is still unknown. Roommates should also communicate together before arriving to campus to arrange who is bringing what large item, like fridges, tv, and rugs. And remember 8 out of 10 students asked said they wore the same 12 outfits during the semester and wished they had not packed so many clothes.

Visitation does not begin until students have met with their roommate(s) and completed a roommate agreement with their RA. For the purposes of guests during move-in, students will be limited to one guest in their building after 8pm on the day they move in. Visitation during the year is also limited to one guest per student.

What you'll need to move in

Consider bringing a small cart or dolly. Although carts are available in many buildings, there is a limited number of carts available for students to use. You might also consider bringing a small tool kit and a pen for filling out several forms at check in. If you have not done so, please take a look at our what to bring and what not to bring checklist.

Checking into a residence hall room

Each student must have his/her VSU 1 Card to check in. Students should know their student ID number and emergency contact information (preferably, this should be someone in the United States). Only the student can receive a room key; family members and roommates cannot check into a room and receive a key for a student.

    Other Information

Due to COVID19 and limiting people in the residence halls, we will not be lofting beds during the Fall semester. We hope to resume this in the Spring semester and can let students know as we get closer to Spring.
