Dear Pre-Athletic Training Major:

This map is a term-by-term sample course schedule. The milestones listed below each term are designed to keep you on course to graduate in four years. Two sample schedules are provided as general guidelines to help you build a full schedule each term (one includes summer semester matriculation and one does not). The sample schedules are strictly an example. The actual courses students enroll in each semester are contingent upon core course offerings, clinical requirements, and Athletic Training major course requirements. Please note, the actual courses each semester must be selected with your advisor to satisfy all core curriculum and state, lab science, and multicultural requirements. The Athletic Training program admissions process begins the first fall semester as a pre-athletic training student.

An athletic trainer is a qualified health care professional educated and experienced in the management of health care problems associated with physical activity. In cooperation with physicians and other health care personnel, the athletic trainer functions as an integral member of the health care team in secondary schools, colleges/universities, professional sports programs, sports medicine clinics, and other health care settings. The athletic trainer functions in cooperation with medical personnel, athletic personnel, individuals involved in physical activity, parents and guardians in the development and coordination of efficient and responsive athletic health care delivery systems. (CAATE)

Students who complete the major in athletic training will graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training degree. The athletic training program is accredited by the Commission of the Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). The athletic trainer’s professional preparation is directed toward the development of specified competencies in the following domains: Evidence-Based Practice, Prevention and Health Promotions, Clinical Examination and Diagnosis, Acute Care Injuries and Illnesses, Therapeutic Interventions, Psychosocial Strategies and Referral, Healthcare Administration, Professional Development and Responsibility, and Clinical Integration Proficiencies.
