Middle Grades Education Graduate Programs
The Department of Teacher Education offers two Middle Grades Graduate Programs: the Master of Arts in Teaching in Middle Grades or Secondary Education (MAT) or the Masters of Education in Middle Grades Concentration Areas: Math & Science (M.Ed.).
The Master of Arts in Teaching in Middle Grades or Secondary Education is an initial certification program in either Middle Grades or Secondary Education that has two curriculum tracks. This program is designed for those who obtained an undergraduate degree in majors other than education.
The Master of Education in Middle Grades Concentration Areas: Math and Science (M.Ed.) degree has a curriculum that is designed for certified teachers who seek advanced knowledge and skills for the middle grade classroom. The program is offered in an online format.

Valdosta State University offers a Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) initial certification program in either Middle Grades or Secondary Education, with two curriculum tracks. This program is designed for those who obtained an undergraduate degree in majors other than education.
The Employed Teacher track is for those who are currently teaching on a non-renewable (provisional) certificate. It is designed as a four-semester program; at the end of the first year a candidate may be recommended for initial renewable certification (T-4) and at the end of the fourth semester a candidate may earn a master's degree (M.A.T.)with a T-5 certification. Cohort groups begin in June only. Application deadline is April 15.
The Full-Time Student track of the M.A.T. is a fifth year program beyond a bachelor's degree and is a full-time day time program in which candidates may earn a master's degree (M.A.T.) and renewable teaching certification in four semesters. Cohort groups begin in June only. Application deadline is April 15.

The M.Ed. in Middle Grades Concentration Areas: Math and Science is an advanced degree, offering in-service middle grades teachers the opportunity to pursue advanced training in their teaching fields. Current certification in Middle Grades Math and/or Science is required for admission to the degree program, in order for the candidate to be considered for a teaching certificate upgrade. The degree is awarded through the NCATE accredited Dewar College of Education & Human Services at Valdosta State University. Top graduate faculty from Valdosta State University and North Georgia College and State University teach the courses. This 12-course program can be completed in four consecutive semesters – about 16 months - with full-time enrollment. Courses are offered on a continuous basis, allowing for part-time enrollment. All course-work, including exams, is done online. No campus visits are required to complete the program.
