Bands at VSU
There is a place for everyone who wants to make music at Valdosta State University. The band program is home to our outstanding Wind Ensemble, the 36th edition of the Valdosta State University Blazin' Brigade Marching Band, and the famed Hot Shots basketball pep band. SPRING BAND AUDITIONS
Woodwinds: Monday, December 2, 6:00-10:00 p.m., Whitehead Auditorium
Percussion: Wednesday, December 4, 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m., Percussion Studio
Brass: Wednesday, December 4, 6:00-10:00 p.m., Whitehead Auditorium
Auditions for Wind Ensemble and Concert Band are blind and will be heard by a panel consisting of ensemble conductors and applied music faculty.
Audition sign-up will be posted November 11 in the Department of Music office, Fine Arts room 2018 (Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m.-5:30 p.m., and Friday 8:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.). To preserve the anonymity of the process, students will sign up for five-minute audition slots using their 870 number and cell phone number. Audition results will be announced December 9 via email.
Music majors are required to audition on the Wind Ensemble excerpts. Non-majors may audition using the Wind Ensemble excerpts to be considered for membership in Wind Ensemble, but are only required to play the Concert Band excerpts for seating auditions only.
Wind Ensemble (MUSC 4850) meets Monday and Wednesday, 11:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m., and Friday, 11:00-11:50 a.m. Concert Band (MUSC 3850) meets Monday and Wednesday, 4:00-5:15 p.m.
Wind Ensemble is the premiere wind band at Valdosta State University and is conducted by Benjamin Harper, director of bands. Recent performances have included music by composers Kevin Walczyk, Joni Greene, Aaron Perrine, John Mackey, Jennifer Jolley, and William Bolcom. VSU faculty are regularly featured as soloists with Wind Ensemble.
Wind Ensemble performs a diverse repertoire of the highest caliber from chamber works to large ensemble pieces emphasizing a strong commitment to new music and standard repertoire. As a professional training ensemble, Wind Ensemble focuses on development of independent musicianship and leadership skills in a large group setting.
Wind Ensemble meets in fall and spring semesters on Mondays and Wednesdays, 11:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m., and Fridays, 11:00-11:50 a.m. Membership is open to all students by audition each semester.
How to Join Wind Ensemble
Membership in the Valdosta State University Wind Ensemble is by blind auditions open to all qualified students at VSU. Auditions for fall semester are held during the first week of classes and spring semester auditions are held near at end of fall semester, and are heard by a panel consisting of ensemble conductors and applied music faculty. Audition excerpts are comprised of contrasting technical and lyrical etudes and music excerpts from repertoire that will be performed on upcoming concerts.

Concert Band meets spring semester and focuses on building individual and ensemble musician skills while maintaining high level expectation in performance quality. Chair placement auditions for spring are held near the end of fall semester.
