Stephanie Larkin

Courses: ENGL 1101, 1102, Writing
All throughout my school career, I have enjoyed writing, whether it was a creative work that swirled together from imagination or captured little pieces of everyday life or even papers that compiled mountains of information into crisp documents. As I grew older, teaching others to write or even proofreading classmates’ papers—a task I still find strangely enjoyable—was something I loved. While taking classes at Valdosta State University, I quickly realized these two passions could combine through my tutoring writing at the Academic Support Center! I hope to assist students through my time here, helping them as they continue on their educational journeys.

When I was heading into college, I was discouraged from doing something I liked due to a recurring medical condition. So I sought out Environmental Geosciences. At first my mind was only on the weather aspect, but I took more classes and explored more ideas and learned to love it all! Another side of me came out as I noticed other students wasn't doing so well in the geography and geology courses, I wanted to help of course and offered it out to those around me. I held study groups to help those and for those to help me with things that I had trouble with, so in the end we all ended up being successful. So I set my goal to helping others succeed in geoscience courses to the best of my ability.

Amiah Hartman
Tutor
Courses: MATH 1101, 1111, 1113, 1261
I am currently a sophomore pursuing a degree in marketing. Since the 6th grade, I realized I really enjoy working math problems, and around this age, I began tutoring other students my age and younger. Throughout high school, I enjoyed helping students thrive academically, and I proudly served as a mentor and a guide for my peers. I feel like if you have some knowledge and wisdom to share, it is only right to share it with those you encounter, and likewise, learn from individuals who have some to give back.

Recitation Leader, Lab Tutor
Courses: MATH 1111, 1112, 1113, 2261
Carson Anderson
Tutor
Courses: MATH 1111, 1112, 1113, 2150, 2261, 2262, 2263, 2620, 3010, 3040, 3600, 4081, 4150
My name is Carson, and I am currently pursuing a graduate degree for Adult and Career Education at Valdosta State University. My undergraduate degree is from VSU in mathematics, and I love the subject. Math is by far my favorite area of study, and I enjoy talking about it to everyone! I too often hear comments like "math isn't my thing," or worse, "I hate math." In my experience, most people have negative feelings about or even a fear of math. It is because of the negative stigma around math that I strive to be an educator. Math is beautiful and I have made it my goal to alleviate the fear that haunts too many people. I believe that if we can find the math in what we love, we can learn to love math. Give a man a fish; feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish; feed him for life. Teach a man to math, and he'll study statistics about the population of his pond and know how many people he can feed and the most effective way to do so.

When I first came to VSU, I never planned on staying. I was here in the pre-engineering program with dreams of transferring to GA Tech, but dreams can change and mine did. After my freshmen year, due to some complications with my parents, I had to take a year off. The time I had went to thinking about what I really wanted to do with my life. After changing my major multiple times, I finally settled on math in hopes of one day being able to teach others. I began to tutor others in my math classes when they were having trouble, reaffirming me that this was what I was meant to do. Now that I get to work at the ASC, I am one step closer to helping other achieve their own dreams. Thank you for taking the time to read this!

I am a senior Math major with a specialization in Secondary Education and a first year tutor in the Academic Support Center. Teaching and spreading knowledge is a passion of mine and has been what I wanted to do since a young age. Coming from two generations of educators, you could also say it is the “family business”. Both of my parents received Math degrees from VSU, so it seemed natural to continue the legacy when I began here in 2015. I have loved my time at VSU and stay involved on campus as a member of the Honors College, Alpha Chi, and the Concert Choir. Because I believe we are meant to be lifelong learners, I value and respond to students that are giving a visible effort towards their education. If you’re willing to work, I am willing to help!

The Political Science department at Valdosta State University is phenomenal at teaching students the inner workings of government, policy making, and even legal matters. Some students need help implementing the knowledge they're taught in the classroom into a research paper, and they might seek to learn new studying techniques for exams that can range in subject and difficulty. I am happy to help! As a senior Political Science major, I have seen what this program has to offer. I hope to help students excel in the Global Issues class by teaching them the necessary skills to succeed in the projects before them.

I am a management major, but taking a biology class changed my life! There are so many interesting and important things for us to know about the natural world. I am more than thankful I am getting the opportunity to help other students understand and do better in their classes. I find helping others a very fulfilling task. From the moment I took the VSU campus tour when applying to the university, I knew that the ASC was a place where I would want to work. Knowing that you contributed your bit to the academic success of a student is a priceless feeling. I am looking forward to helping whoever may need my help!

Ashlyn Simons
SI Leader
Courses: SPAN 1001
Hello! My name is Ashlyn and I have been attending VSU for three years now, although I am formally listed as a sophomore. My first encounter with the Spanish language was in high school with one of the greatest teachers I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. Ironically enough, she gave out little certificates at the end of each semester and I received "most likely to become a Spanish teacher" on both occasions that I took her Spanish course. By my freshmen year at VSU, I still had not accepted her insistence on my knack for Spanish and natural ability to teach. Eventually I met Professor Heath and remembered why I loved learning and helping others learn Spanish so much! Long story not so short, I am now tutoring others in beginning Spanish courses and I could not be happier!

Daniel Winchester

Courses: ENGL 1101, 1102, 2060, 2112, Writing
Hello! I’m Daniel Winchester. I’m from Thomasville, Georgia, and am currently a junior. I was attacked by a dog at an early age and almost died. Since then, I’ve become a lot chiller and just want to help out anyone where I can. Reading has always been my passion, and I’ve always enjoyed discussing that with others. So what’s a mash up of helping and reading? Why being a tutor of course! I hope I can help students in English, but also help them realize that everything will be ok.

A Computer Science major might not be what you typically picture when you think of a writing tutor, but don't let that fool you. I also have a BA in Philosophy and Religious Studies from right here at VSU, so believe me when I say I've written a lot of papers, most on esoteric subjects that most people don't know or care about. It is my pleasure to leverage this expertise to help you!

When I began school, I studied English and Psychology because I couldn't communicate well. I figured that English was the best method for learning how to write and speak, so I eventually decided to get my English BA from VSU. Fast forward - I've started the English Grad program, and my goal is to teach English composition and creative writing. If I can teach others how to use the language, we'll all be able to communicate better in the future. Plus, it's a great field for fiction nerds like myself.

I'm an engineering student, originally from Jamaica. Despite being an Engineering major, I have a passion for writing. My enthusiasm and potential for it were nurtured through positive interactions with both teachers and tutors who encouraged my growth in the field and allowed me to become more confident in my abilities. Hello, my name is Sherry Lammons. I am from a small town, Pelham, Ga., which could probably fit in a wedding ring box. I am a senior and I’m excited for graduation. I’ve always loved writing whether it be short stories, poetry, songs, or even essays (they’re my favorite assignments!). I love helping people with writing because it feels great to see a huge amount of pressure and stress to lift up off of them once everything is complete. In my free time, I enjoy trying to sing, playing the sims, and sleeping—because for some reason I never get enough. If you need help with any writing assignment, come see me and I’ll be happy to guide you towards your A!

Stephanie Larkin
Tutor
