Hello!  My name is Teresa Marie Sumner and I am a Junior here at Valdosta State University majoring in Early Childhood Education.  I am twenty-three years old and I commute to Valdosta from my hometown of Sylvester.  This (Spring 2006) is my first semester at VSU;  I graduated with my Associate of Science Degree from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton this past December.  VSU is so different from junior college, I am loving it so far!  My husband, Tom, and I have been married since August 2004 and we have a beautiful little girl named Tallie.  Tallie is a dog, but to me she is just the same as a member of the family.  She is a black mouth cur and has an extra toe on each foot.  I love to read, paint, watch the UGA Bulldogs, and spend time with my friends and family.

My heart has always pulled me towards the teaching profession.  When I was little, I would force my two brothers to play school with me; they were the students and I was always the teacher.  Oh, how they hated playing!  When they absolutely refused, I would line my stuffed animals up and teach them instead!  I have a strong desire to serve as a positive force in childrens' lives.  Childhood should be a time of growth and exploration; I believe that every child should have the opportunity to learn in a warm, encouraging, creative environment and should look forward to attending school each day.  That is my goal in teaching: I want my students to have a strong desire to grow, explore, and learn new things.

I am most inspired by Mrs. Schwartz.  Mrs. Schwartz was my fourth grade teacher at Woodland Elementary School in Barrington, New Jersey. Mrs. Schwartz had the voice and apperance of a humble, loving grandmother with her short graying hair and bright red glasses.  She was constantly encouraging her students to grow and explore, just as I hope to do.  The activity I remember most fondly from my fourth grade year was reading.  Mrs. Schwartz read aloud Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli, and The BFG by Roald Dahl.  I was enthralled by the books and, thanks to her clever ability to make reading an enjoyable experience, reading is now one of my favorite things to do.  I hope to have such a positive, lasting impact on the students that I teach

Staying in touch with whats happening in our world is important; I make sure to visit CNN at least once a day to catch up with the current events.

How 'bout them dawgs?!  Be sure to check out my favorite team, and the 2005 SEC Champs, the Georgia Bulldogs.
