What
is the median?
page 3
The
median is the number in
the
middle of a data set that is arranged from least to
greatest. For example, the
picture shows
five
different priced trucks. Truck
#1 is $22,000,
truck #2 costs $40,000,
truck #3 costs $42,000,
truck #4 costs $41,500, and
truck #5 costs $42,500. To
find the median of the
truck prices, you
must first put the
price of the trucks in order from least to greatest:
$22,000, $40,000, $41,000, $42,000,
$42,500.
Which number appears in the
middle? $41,000.
What
happens if there is an
even number of data numbers and you
have two numbers in the middle?
