The reason for this website is to
expose children to the beginning history of the United States and the
beginnings of the American government. It strives to show the how
the American colonies banded together and declared their freedom from
the English crown and began their own country.

Activity One: 1. Title/ of Activity and Brief Description of the activity: Color the signers of the Declaration of Independence 2. PLO - What will the student learn from doing this activity? The students will reinforce reading skills and name the signers of the Declaration of Independence. 3. Web Site and any other materials that students need to do the activity: Signing the Declaration of Independence Coloring Page. 4. Procedures Explain steps for teaching the activity Include any questions or things that children should be looking for as they navigate through the web site. a. The students will go to the Signing The Delcaration of Independence website. b. They will print out the color page and color the pitcure of the signers OR using the computer and mouse, will use the interactive colors on the website to color the picture while on the computer. c. After coloring (if done on computer) print out the colored picture on color printer. 5. Product: What will students do with the information they learned on the web site to satisfy the PLO? Ask the students to describe their coloring sheets and present them to the class. Activity Two: 1. Title/ of Activity and Brief Description of the activity: Declaration of Independence Word Jumble 2. PLO - What will the student learn from doing this activity? The students will learn grade appropriate vocabulary concerning the Declaration of Independence, lincluding the signers. The students will choose one signer of the Declaration of Independence and do research on him. 3. Web Site and any other materials that students need to do the activity: The Declaration of Independence Jumbled Word Activity. 4. Procedures Explain steps for teaching the activity Include any questions or things that children should be looking for as they navigate through the web site. a. The students will go to the Declaration of Independence Jumble Word Activity site. b. The will read the clues and decode the word jumble. The jumbled word will be either a signer of the Declaration, a reason or person behind the Declaration and type the correct word in the box. c. The students will hit enter and see the correct answer for the jumble. They will repeat this for all twenty questions. d. When finished, the students will choose one of the signers of the Declaration and do reasearch and present it to the class. 5. Product: What will students do with the information they learned on the web site to satisfy the PLO? By typing the correct names, the children will increase their vocabulary and will learn about the signers of the Declaration of Independence by doing reasearch. Activity Three: 1. Title/ of Activity and Brief Description of the activity: The Call for Independence 2. PLO - What will the student learn from doing this activity? The students will work in groups to research the Declaration of Independence. 3. Web Site and any other materials that students need to do the activity: Social Studies: Celebrating Freedon Resources. 4. Procedures Explain steps for teaching the activity Include any questions or things that children should be looking for as they navigate through the web site. a. The students will go to the website. b. Working with a small group, the students will go to the "A Call for Independence" website and the "Preservation" website. c. After working together with their small groups, the children will answer the questions on the Social Studies: Celebrating Freedom Resources page. 5. Product: What will students do with the information they learned on the web site to satisfy the PLO? The students will present their findings to the class. |
