Who am I?
My name is Shahn-Ryan
Schumacher and I am a
senior at Valdosta
State University in Valdosta, Georgia. I am currently studying
the field of Deaf Education with the intent of pursuing first a
Bachelors and then a Masters degree in the field. I am originally
from Statesboro, Georgia and I already hold a Bachelors degree from
Georgia Southern University in the area of General Studies. I was
previously the senior assistant manager at the Burger King in
Statesboro and I held the position of manager for six and a half
years. My hobbies include creative writing and science-fiction
and when I have the time and opportunity I also like to act in
plays. My favorite science fiction program of all time is the hit
British sci-fi series (revived on the BBC in March of 2005 after a 16
year absence from television), Doctor
Who.
Why do I want to be a teacher?
Honestly, I can't see me doing
anything else. I
have always been
fascinated by the Deaf Community and have, for several years, wanted to
learn and become proficient at, American Sign Language or ASL.
And over the course of the years I have had a friend or two here and
there who was deaf and communicated via ASL. I had the privilege
of using TTY/TDD communication with my friend Andy, who I sadly have
lost touch with. I have also been told by several friends that I
have worked with or knew outside of work that my penchant for cartoon
character voices and dramatic abilities would be useful in teaching
children in new and inventive ways. I also have a soft spot in my
heart for kids.
These
are
pictures of my nephew, Daniel Hunter Maulden, who was born September
10, 2004. I love him as much as a doting uncle can and he is
another reason why I want to be a teacher.
Who or what inspired me?
That is probably the easiest
question of all to
answer. When I
graduated in December 2001 with my degree from Georgia Southern, I was
hoping that having finally received my degree I could at last leave the
world of the foodservice industry. I had been employed in fast
food since the age of 15 (just a month shy of my 16th birthday) and I
was feeling very much that I didn't want to spend the rest of my days
slinging hamburgers or managing people that do. It simply was not
the be-all and end-all of my career goals. Sadly, I discovered
very quickly that there was precious little in the way of jobs for a
holder of a General Studies degree. So, in the fall of 2004, I
began plans to return to school here at Valdosta State (with the intent
of going into Speech Pathology, but sadly, my GPA wasn't high
enough). My mother had gone on and gotten her Masters degree in
Special Education at the age of fifty and I saw my sister getting her
Associates degree in Physical Therapy from Middle Georgia
College. Seeing them striving towards their goals inspired me to
return. There is also the fact that I did not want to be 35 years
old and still being a manager at a fast food restaurant and working
very late at night and having to work weekends.
