The primary learning outcomes to be achieved with this lesson include:
A. With teacher guidance student
will be able to identify coins by name and value and use different
combinations of the coins to purchase items less than thirty cents.
Assessed Standards
Georgia Performance Standard (GPS)
Mathematics Performance
Standard
Grade: K
Numbers and Operations
MKN1. Students will connect
numerals to the quantities they represent.
h. Identify coins by name and
value (penny, nickel, dime, and quarter).
i. Count out pennies to buy items that together cost less than 30 cents.
Materials and Equipment:
1. Have an example of e-book activity to show students
2. Paper for drawing
3. Crayons and/or color markers
4. Pencil & paper (to make notes for lesson plan assessment and
reflections)
5. Modification of a lesson developed by Dr. Diane L. Judd
Technology Connection:
Technologies that will be used in this lesson include:
Procedures:
Step One:
Introduction
Have a small group of students go to a computer. Explain to
students that you are going to use the computer to read an e-book
about pennies, nickels, dimes,
and quarters.
List 2 or more
questions that introduce students
to your e-book that will establish a
connection to students' prior knowledge by asking them:
1. "Have you ever studied or read a book
about coins?"
2. "Can you tell me the value of a penny,
nickel, dime, and quarter?"
Today we are going
to learn about coins and their
value
on the Internet.
I have made a special e-book on the Internet for your
class. (During discussion have students turn around away from the
computer to interact.)
Estimated Time for Step One:
5 minutes
Step Two
Teaching the Primary Learning Outcomes:
(Students will sit at the computer where they can control the mouse
and computer.) (Explain to students the process of the
lesson.) After we read the e-book and visit
several websites about coins, we will complete an activity
about money and it's value.
Check for understanding
Students with teacher assistance will read the e-book, explore, and
discuss
the information in the four linking websites that go with the
e-book. Ask
students guiding
questions about the important concepts in the e-book and/or the linking
websites. List four or more questions.
1. How much is a penny
worth?
2. How much is a
nickel worth?
3. How much is a dime worth?
4. How much is a quarter worth?
Practice and feedback related to the
PLO
Read the e-book project to students. Explain to students that
they
are going to be shoppers in a store that sells
school supplies.
They will shop for school supplies without spending more than the
thirty cents they are given. Tell
the
students that the information that they will need to complete
their e-book project is listed and connected in the e-book
activity. Review the
information in the linked website in
the e-book activity with the students to emphasize
interesting and important information students will need to complete
mission
project.
| E-Book
Activity Now that you know all about money, let's take a trip to the store! This store carries pencils, erasers, crayons, notebooks, and many other school supplies. You will be given thirty cents to spend on anything you want. Choose wisely, and have fun at the store! |
|
Steps for
E-Book Activity
1. Pretend you are going to the store to buy some school supplies. 2. Choose one item from the store to buy. 3. Pay the cashier for the item you are buying, and take your change. 4. After you have bought something from the store, tell your teacher the name of the item you bought, how much it was, and how much change you received. She or he will write you a receipt to turn in. |
[Students will write (or dictate to teacher) information to be included on their store receipt
for the e-book project.
While
students are completing e-book project, teacher
will observe students and give assistance when needed.]
Step Three
Closure:
Have students discuss their e-book activity and
information they found on the Internet.
Tell students that your E-Book Website is on the Internet and
they can
visit the website at school or home. Explain to students
that you are going to put their pictures and information
on the Internet and they will be able to share their mission
projects with
their friends and family. (If possible teacher should take
brief
notes during the lesson and concluding discussions to be added
later
to the assessment and reflections in lesson plan.)
Estimated Time for Step Three:
5 minutes
Accommodation:
Links
for Accommodations for Special Students
1. After completing the contextual factors for your class, select one
of your students that needs special
attention. Describe the student in your class with special needs.
(Do not use the student's real name. You could refer to the
student
as "the special student.") Describe
your student and his or her needs.
2. Explain what you would add to
this
lesson
plan to accommodate your special student? Explain
what you would add to this lesson to accommodate your special student.
Assessment the
Primary Learning Outcomes (PLOs)
Mathematics
Student will be assessed through
observation, whether or not they give the cashier enough money for
their item, and whether or not they can correctly count the change they
were given. The student will also be assessed on how well they
listen and gain knowledge to teacher guidance if they are confused or
struggling.
