Title of Lesson:
Primary Learning Outcomes (PLOs):
The primary learning outcomes to be achieved with this lesson
include:
A. With teacher guidance student will be able to use the computer to
research topic information on the Internet. (QCC- Technology
Integration- Research- 4-13)
B. With teacher guidance student will be able to listen to information
to gain knowledge. (GPS- English/Language Arts- Comprehension-

Technology Connection:
Technologies that will be used in this lesson include:
Procedures:
Step One: Introduction
Have a small group of students go to a computer. Explain to
students that you are going to use the computer to find out information
about the solar system. List 2 or more questions that introduce
students to your TopicQuest that establish a connection to students'
prior knowledge by asking them:
1. "Have you ever studied, read a
book, or watched a movie about the solar system?"
2. "Can you tell me something that
you know about the planets?"
Today we are going to learn about the
solar system by visiting websites on the Internet and we will do a fun
activity. I have made a special Web page for your
class. (During discussion have students turn around away
from the computer to interact.)
Estimated Time for Step One:
5 minutes
Step Two Teaching the
Primary Learning Outcomes:
(Have students sit at the computer where
they can control the mouse and computer.) (Explain to the process of
the lesson.) After we visit several websites about the
solar system, you will pretend to be on a mission for NASA. You
will paint a picture of the solar system using a computer program
called MS Paint. You will then write three interesting facts about each
of the nine planets. Once you have completed your mission, your work
will be placed on the Internet for others to view.
Check for understanding
Have students explore and discuss the information in each of the 3
pre-selected websites. Ask students guiding questions about the
important concepts in each of the visited websites. List
three or more questions.
1. Which of the nine planets are
considered inner planets?
2. If you were traveling
to Saturn from the sun, which planets would you pass on your way?
3.
Can you state the names of all the nine planets?
Practice and feedback related to the
PLO
Read mission project to students. Explain
to students that they are going to be on mission for NASA.
Tell the students that the information that they will need to complete their mission project is
listed and connected in the mission activity. Visit
websites for information for mission project. Discuss the
information in the linked website in the mission activity with the
students to emphasize interesting and important information students
will need to complete mission project.
[Students will view the different web
sites, write three facts about each planet, and draw a picture of the
solar system using MS Paint. While students are completing
mission project, teacher will observe students and give assistance when
needed.]
| Mission NASA needs your help! They need
a picture of the Solar System. Your mission is to first,
view the different web sites of the Solar System. Next, Make
a picture of the Solar
System. Then, you are to list three
interesting facts about each planet. I will then place your
picture and your facts on the Internet to share with other
people. Have fun as you explore the Solar System.
|
|
Mission
Steps
1. We are going to
look at the web sites about the Solar System. 2. We are then going to open up MS Paint so that you can draw a picture of the Solar System. I will guide you through this mission to show you different features of MS Paint. 3. You will then write three interesting facts about each of the nine planets on a sheet of paper. (You may go back to the different web sites and review the information if you need to.) 4. After you have drawn your picture and written your facts, I will then place your work on the Internet for others to see. |
Step Three
Closure:
Have students discuss their mission project and information they found
on the Internet. Tell students that your topicquest page is on
the Internet and they can visit the website at school or home.
Explain to students that you are going to put their pictures and
information on the Internet and they will be able to share their
mission projects with their friends and family. (If possible
teacher should take brief notes during the lesson and concluding
discussions to be added later to the assessment and reflections in
lesson plan.)
Estimated Time for Step Three:
5 minutes
Assessment:
A. Technology Integration
Student will be assessed through observation while using the computer
with teacher guidance to do research on the Internet for topic
information.

Student stayed off task and I
had to correct his grammar several times. His work shows that even when
I told him to use complete sentences he failed to do so. |
| 2 |
2 |
Student did not stay focused
through out the lesson. She wanted to keep exploring the web sites
instead of looking for facts about each planet. |
Accommodation:
Links
for Accommodations for Special Students
1. Select one of your students that needs special attention. Sally is a student who receives special
education services because she has ________. She uses a wheelchair and
must have a para-pro with her at all times. Sally has a weakness in
motor skills, cognitive ability, and speech. Sally can not speak
clearly and tries to use some sign language to communicate.
2. Explain what you would add to this lesson plan to accommodate your special student? I would allow Sally's para-pro to help her manipulate the mouse. I would allow for Sally to cut and paste pictures off the Internet, if she cannot use the MS paint to draw the planets. I would also allow Sally extra time to complete the assignment. I would place Sally at the computer station with the larger keyboard so that she could try to type the facts herself instead of her para-pro.
Comments & Reflections: For Electronic Portfolio Principle
#1 Content and Curriculum: Teachers demonstrate a strong content
knowledge of content area(s). Describe how your TopicQuest project is evidence that shows
how you understand concepts of knowledge. Also tell how you used
the tools of inquiry to develop and implement your TopicQuest for your
elementary students in your field classroom
1. Describe how you developed the mini-research TopicQuest
lesson for your students. Include your process of researching and
selecting web sites for your pre-k/elementary students. I used a
variety of search engines to find web sites that dealt with the Solar
System. I went into several sites and evaluated each site. I based my
decision on the age appropriateness of each site. I also looked
for kid- friendly sites that were easy to use. I also went with
sites that offered a variety of information and colorful pictures.
2. Comment
on your teaching of how your
TopicQuest lesson created learning experiences and activities that
implemented the use a variety of resources and technologies. I
used the Internet to increase my knowledge of the information pertained
in my lesson then I allowed the students to use the Internet and
MS Paint and MS Work to create pictures.
4. Examine and describe your
teaching of this TopicQuest lesson. I first introduced the lesson to
the students. I then asked questions to gain insight into their prior
knowledge of the subject. I then instructed the students on how to get
to the web sites they were to explore. The students used the mini
resource area of my web page to learn about the Solar System. After
investigating each site the students then took notes about each planet.
The students then did an activity on MS Paint in which they drew a
picture of the Solar System. I then concluded the lesson by asking the
students to tell me the three things they enjoyed learning about from
the different sites. After I was completely finished with the
lesson, I gave the students the opportunity to watch me scan
their work.
5. Give at least on suggestion that
would lead to improving your teaching practices and student
achievement.
I would offer more web sites for the students to use and allow
them more time to explore each site and collect facts.

was asked to draw a picture of the Solar System using MS Paint and
write
three facts about each planet in the solar system. This is a drawing
and facts completed by a student going into fourth grade. Below is the
scanned facts written by this student.![]() |
