Georgia Performance Standard
 For 2nd Grade Social Studies

SS2H1 The student will read about and describe the lives of historical figures in
Georgia history.
b. Describe how everyday life of these historical figures is similar to and different
from everyday life in the present (food, clothing, homes, transportation, communication,
recreation, rights, and freedoms).

Activity 1   time

1. Past and Present Timeline- This activity will allow the students to record important events and facts that has happen in history within the course of 100 years.

2. PLO - Students will be able to compare and contrast  the differences and similarities in our past and present culture.

3. Timeline
    Materials: Computer w/Internet, poster paper, colored markers, resource books

4. Procedures  
* Assign groups of four to research a certain decade in numerical order. After they gather information on food, clothes, transportation, rights and freedoms for that time period, have them record the data on their poster paper.

 T
he events that happened first are at the bottom. Then, as you move toward the top, the event that happened next is next as you move up the line. The last event is at the top.

 Explain to the students that putting events on a Timeline gives them a sense of how much time goes by in between each event in history. It also helps them remember just when those important things happened.

*Ask students to look for specific information about the rights and freedoms during their period and compare it to the freedoms now.

5.  Product: Students will be able to visually identify with the past cultures and customs in history when comparing them to the modern period.



Activity 2

 1.  America on the Move - This activity will inform students about how transportation has transformed America.

2. PLO - Students will learn how transportation has changed in the past 100 years. Students will be able to build a deeper understanding of how transportation shaped American commerce, communities, landscapes, and population migrations.

3. American history
Materials: Computer w/ Internet, paper, markers

4. Procedures  
Assign students into small groups. Have each group explore the web to find information on transportation during their assign time period. Transportation quizzes and games are found at American history

After the information is found, have students draw their types of transportation on the front of the paper and on the back briefly write about it.

*Have all the groups match their vehicles with their  time periods to learn how much transportation in America has changed over time.

Explain steps for teaching the activity. Include any questions or things that children should be looking for as they navigate through the web site.

5.  Product:  Students will be able to identify with how the forms of transportation have changed drastically, and the importance of quality transportation in America.




Activity 3
 
future

 1.  What will the future bring? This activity will allow students to discover where America has been and where we are going in the future.

2. PLO - The students will learn the ways in which America has changed for the best and for the worst.

3.  Future America
       Materials: Computer/Internet, index cards, writing utensil
4. Procedures  
The students will be given a topic to research, such as transportation, communication, living, etc. They will record current data on their topics.
 
According to their current data, students will make predictions about what the future will bring and create a newsletter.

In the newsletter, students will create an article for the year 2050 and explain how their topic has drastically changed. (the cost, characteristics, etc).

5.  Product:  Students will be able to make predictions according to how the American culture has changed in the last 100 years. The websites will inform them and educate them on their given and related topics.
