Topic Activities:
Activity 1
Title:What Did You Learn?
Description:This activity involves the student taking a short quiz about Earth's disasters.
PLO: The student will learn about hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes, fires, and mudslides. The student will learn when to expect these disasters, what to do when they happen, and what they need when these disasters happen.
Content Areas:Science and Language Arts
Procedures: Students will read about hurricanes and other disasters on this website. They will be looking for information  about  hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, fires, and mudslides. Important questions to look for include: What are disasters? What to do when these disasters take place? How often do they take place? When do they take place? Where should you go when they take place? After looking for information the students will go to the website and take the quiz. The students will print off the results and then correct their mistakes with a partner. Becoming a Disaster Action Kid
Product: Students will have the final product when they have corrected their mistakes on the sheet that was printed off. Students will then pick a disaster. They will write and draw a picture about it. They will include what disaster it is, when it happens, what to do when it happens, and what they will need when this disaster happens.

Activity 2
Title: Make A Tornado!
Description: Students will use various items such as a piece of wood, glue gun, vinyl sheets, small held-hand fan, deli dish or cup, clear plastic plant saucer, water, and dry ice to make a tornado.
PLO: Students will learn how tornadoes are formed by making a model of a tornado.
Content Areas: Science and Math
Procedures: Students will go to the website and read about the different disasters. When reading about tornadoes the student will look for information such as: How  are tornadoes formed? What causes tornadoes? Where do tornadoes occur? Students will then go to the tornado making website and create tornadoes by using the eight simple steps.

Web Weather for Kids
Product: After completion of the tornadoes students will answer the questions on their own paper: What causes  tornadoes? What is happening when tornadoes form? What do tornadoes have to do with the weather?

Activity 3
Title: The Scavenger Hunt
Description: Students will read about hurricanes and other disasters and what they need when these disasters occur. The students will print off a copy of the scavenger hunt on line and make sure that they have these items in their house or at school ready to use.
PLO: Students will learn about the items they need when a disaster occurs.
Content Areas: Science and Math
Procedures: Students will read about the different types of disasters and look for items they need when these disasters occur. The students will then print off the on line worksheet that states a list of how many different items are needed.Students will go around in their homes to makes sure they have all of the required items.Students will mark off items that they have and note the items that they need. They will bring the checklist back to school. Next, the teacher will assign each student a few items. The students will try and bring those items to school.  Hurricane Preparedness for Kids
Product: Students will complete the checklist and bring items to school. The teacher will allow the students to group together and make their own disaster supply kits. The students will then explain these items, where they are found (at home and school), and why they are important.

    Software Programs

 hurrsoft
Title of software program: Hurricane Havoc:Rescue Heroes
Published by: Vivendi Universal
How it can be used: This software can be used by helping to teach respect for the environment and the importance of safety. It also introduces early science concepts about weather disasters.
Problems with software: This software was very easy to navigate and very informative about the different types of weather. It is user-friendly.I did not have any problems using this software. The only drawback is that the software is in the age level of four to seven, so fourth graders may be bored with it.

           sky
Title of software program: SkyWorks
Published by: ScienceWorks
How it can be used: This software can be used by introducing new interactive and informative activities for students about the sky and how it plays a key role in the weather. It has amazing photos taken in the sky that the students will enjoy.
Problems with software:This software was very engaging and user-friendly. I did not have any problems using this software. Fourth graders would love it because it is very easy to use,it is just their age level, and it is wonderfully animated.

          tornadoeall
Title of software program: Tornadoes
Published by: Nordic Software
How it can be used:
This software program is a useful tool with easy navigation and a straightforward approach about tornadoes. It could be used for individual or small group studies, or for classroom presentations using a multimedia projection system when discussing tornadoes.
Problems with software:
This program is very user-friendly. All of the information presented is clear and concise. It is very easy to navigate and the age level extends from kindergarten to fifth grade. It has various activities for all ages.

              paint
Title of software program: Microsoft Paint
Published by: Microsoft
How it can be used: This program allows students to create different paint picture just by using the mouse. The students could use this program by creating different pictures of the different types of disasters.
Problems with software: This software is user friendly. The only problem is that sometimes it is difficult to draw or paint if you do not choose the right size of pencil or paint brush. It requires a lot of time and patience if you want an excellent picture.

             chart
Title of software program: Microsoft Excel
Published by: Microsoft
How it can be used: Students could keep a table with the different types of disasters. It could show when they occurred, where they occurred, and how often they have occurred. When another disaster takes place students could record it.They could do this all year while in their science class. At the end of the year students could get into groups, choose a disaster, and discuss it with the class. They could also make predictions on how often that disaster will occur next year.
Problems with software: This software takes some time to get adjusted to. After getting adjusted to where everything is located and how to move around in the program it is very helpful. Students will most likely need help with this software.
