Valdosta State University

Section 1: Introduction

Hi, I am Rachel Leigh Jennings, and I am a freshman at Valdosta State University.   I am 18 years old,  I was born on April 13, 1984.  All of my life I have lived in Georgia.  I was born in Atlanta, and have lived in three homes just south of there since.  I graduated from Lovejoy High School in May of 2002.  I decided to come to Valdosta because it was far enough away from home, and I was still able to receive the HOPE scholarship.  Valdosta State University is a beautiful school, and it also has one of the strongest communication disorder programs in the state.  I am still undecided on my major, but I plan on studying speech/language pathology.  I believe that I either want to be a speech therapist or either an American sign-language interpreter.

As I said earlier, I am from Georgia and my family is as well.  Both my mother, Janet Jennings, and father, Michael Jennings, were raised in Georgia.  They both grew up in Newnan, but then my father's family moved to Morrow.  My mother attended Georgia Southern University.  My father was drafted into the Army, and after serving his time he attended Mercer.  They now are both employees of the Clayton County School Board.  I have one older sister, Anna, who is 21 and is a junior at North Georgia College and State University, and is majoring in nursing.

The Freshman Year Experience Program

Section 2: The Freshman Year Experience

The Freshman Year Experience is a program that was created to help in-coming freshman to adjust to college.  To be honest, my mother is the one who wanted me to be in this program.  She felt that it would be beneficial for me because it helps students settle into the ways of college.   In the F.Y.E. program, the classes are small like in high school.   Also, like in high school, you have classes with many of the same people.  Many friendships are formed due to the similar schedules.  Meeting so many people made the transition to college easier because I see familiar faces all over campus.  Other freshman that I know that chose not to be in the program say it has been much harder to meet people in their classes.   I have made some friendships in the Freshman Year Experience program that I know will last.

I learned many helpful things in the F.Y.E. program.  For example, I have become much  more comfortable with doing new things on computers, and I have actually learned how to study!  Sad as that may sound, many students, like me, made it through high school without ever knowing how to study.  If an in-coming student were to ask me whether or not I would advise he or she to be in the Freshman Year Experience or not, I would say yes.  Besides forming new friendships and learning numerous things, students in this program receive a great deal of guidance when registering for classes.  I am glad that I was a member of the Freshman Year Experience program at Valdosta State University because it has made the transition to college an easy one.
