About
Me:
My name is Rachel. I am a junior at Valdosta State University studying Special Education/Early Childhood Education. This is my 3rd year in valdosta and I have come to know the area very well. I work at one of the dorms on campus to make my money, but i am currently looking for a new job away from the school. I am very excited about the semester to come because i am getting to go to an elementary school and get some practice in. I love being so close to the beach down here because me and my friends randomly take day trips to lay out and play in the ocean. I am very ready to get out of school and start my career of teaching. I am very family oriented and will do anything for them. My mom is my hero. She raised my and my 3 other siblings on her own while going back to school to get a masters degree. She has been through so much and one of the goals in life is be able to give back at least one thing that my mom gave to me. She is an amazing woman and I look up to her more than anyone.
Why Teach?
I had never thought of myself as being a teacher, I saw myself in the business world. As a got older I found that i loved working with children, just as much as I loved playing softball and cheerleding. When I was a junior in high school I was tumbling at my gym back home and training for cheerleading, when I got an offer to be a teacher there. My coach saw how i would always be talking about the students and helping them out when I took a break from tumbling. She thought I would be just the person for the job. So I sure enough took it not because of the children but because of the money and the hours. I know that was bad, but I feel in love with the students. Soon enough i was spending all my time at the gym, working and tumbling, but i still didn't want to be a teacher.It took one child to change my mind forever.
Who Inspired Me?
When I was working at the gym there was one student who inspired me to be a teacher for a living. He had Autism and Down Syndrome. My boss was the only one who he would work with and actually listen to. He was put in my class and I was very nervous because no other teacher before me could work with him. I had to gain his trust but also let him see that I was in charge. In time with me working with him he slowly became comfortable with me being in charge. He started listening and then exceling in my class. To this day I am the only teacher, besides my boss, who he worked successfully with. He excelled very quickly and was able to move up in my next age group class. Seeing that I realized that I have a gift that not a lot of people have, as a result I want to help those other Special Education children out there who have no one believing they can do more.
