Dr. Lamprey taught in the Computer Information Systems Department at Georgia State University from 1974 to 1985. He then moved on to Valdosta State University, where he taught computer science until his retirement in 2000. After this official retirement and up until 2008, he taught computer-science classes on a part-time basis for the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at North Georgia College in Dahlonega. He now lives in the Atlanta area with his first wife Patti, an obnoxious cat (Riley), and his hiking buddies, Dodge [pronounced DOJ] and Maggie, two golden retrievers. He also engages in industrial training, consulting, and writing. He does a great deal of volunteer work through the Kiwanis Club of Historic Roswell. This includes helping run a weekly bingo game at a local nursing home, mentoring and tutoring children at local middle and elementary schools, occasionally reading to young children at a daycare center for disadvantaged children, and participating in Adopt-a-Road and Adopt-a-Stream projects. He is privileged to serve on the board of directors of that organization. He is also a lifetime member and serves on the board of directors of Keep Roswell Beautiful, the local affiliate of Keep America Beautiful. He plays the horn in the Alpharetta City Band and the Sounds of Sawnee Community Band and is a member of the Atlanta Horn Club. He is also a member of AlphaBrass, a brass quintet that performs at weddings and parties and also at local nursing homes and assisted-living facilities. He sings baritone in Sentimental Journey, a barbershop quartet, and is a member of the Roswell Firehouse Harmony Brigade, an barbershop singing organization affiliated with S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A. (the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America), the international barbershop harmony society. Under those auspices, he sometimes performs "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" in a quartet that boards buses at Underground Atlanta, bound for the Atlanta Braves games. He ran in the Peachtree Road Race in 2004 and 2005, but, in each case, he was edged out by some Kenyans (not to mention tens of thousands of other folks). He has two adult daughters, Teri and Sarah, (both) of whom he is extremely proud. Teri married Bret Williams in 2005, and Bret is a wonderful addition to the family. On April 20, 2007, Teri gave birth to Dr. Lamprey's first grandchild, a son named Caulder. Dr. Lamprey may be reached by e-mail at rlamprey@valdosta.edu. In memoriam, T.K. (1994-2009) |
