Cyperus sanguinolentus, Bloodscale Sedge, is widespread in the Old World from Eurasia, Malesia, Australia, and Africa.  Carter and Bryson (Sida 19:325-343, 2000) show that populations in the southeastern United States, previously thought to be the narrow endemic species C. louisianensis, are actually the widespread weed C. sanguinolentus.
