THE PHILOSOPHY DEPARTMENT ELECTRONIC BROCHURE

WHY the Department of Philosophy?

Philosophy graduates pursue a variety of post-graduate studies and careers, and all students who major in Philosophy study a rich and diverse spectrum of ideas, great thinkers, problems and arguments. They are challenged by questions and issues central to the history of philosophy, and confront a wide range of topics in the areas of reasoning and argumentation, values, religious studies, philosophy of science and special topics of central concern to the rich heritage of Philosophy. Through a fertile and liberal education, all philosophy students are challenged to develop an appreciation of the multi-disciplinary richness of culture and intellectual history. Our program of study is individually designed to serve these ends, and to enhance technological opportunities; all Philosophy students have access to the global Internet and have automatic electronic mail privileges.

Major in Philosophy

In addition to the college-wide CORE curriculum requirements for the freshman and sophomore years, the Philosophy major requires 24 semester hours of philosophy courses numbered 3000 or above, including History of Philosophy. The major leads to the Bachelor of Arts degree.

Any student, regardless of his or her major, may elect a Philosophy minor. These courses may be selected from a wide variety of offerings. The Minor in Philosophy provides an excellent complement to any major offered at VSU.

Minor in Religious Studies

Open to all majors, this minor provides a rich and exciting list of opportunities. Contact the Department for details of this minor, designed to enhance an academic appreciation of the traditions in religion, West and East.

Minor in Professional and Applied Ethics

Any student, regardless of major, may elect a Minor in Professional and Applied Ethics. A Certificate is awarded upon completion of the minor.
