This Shaker night stand was made from plans in Thos. Moser's How to Build Shaker Furniture. The project is made from solid cherry, with fir for the drawer. The cherry came from a friend's property. I was having some logs cut and he suggested I take an old charred log from some property he had purchased. Once we had the log on the mill, we could see that it was cherry. I had it cut into 1" boards, with no particular plans for its use. I was reading Moser's book and wanted to build this stand. I had enough 5/4" cherry to make the tapered legs so I decided to build the project out of cherry. The sides, back, and bottom front are attached using mortise and tenon joints. The top front uses a dovetail (too close to the end for M&T). The drawer is dovetailed fir with a cherry front. I used Formby's Tung Oil Finish and the color is turning out quite nicely as the stand ages. This is a project I'm proud of. It was fun (I love cherry!) and it was neat to see what that old charred "mystery log" turned out to be.
