Georgia Performance Standards

SS5H - "Students study United States History beginning with the Civil War and continue to the present." This includes the Presidents from 1860.
SS5H6 - Social Studies 5th grade History - The student will explain the reasons for America's involvement in World War II.
SS5H6a. Describe Germany's aggression in Europe and Jananese aggression in Asia.
SS5H6e. Describe the effects of rationing and the changing role of women and African-Americans: include "Rosie the Riveter" and the Tuskegee Airmen.
SS5H6d. Identify Roosevelt, Stalin, Churchill, Hirohito, Truman Mussolini and Hitler.
SS4H7 - The student will examine the main ideas of the abolitionist and suffrage movements.

ELA4R1 - English Language Arts 4th grade Reading 1 - The student demonstrates comprehension and shows evidence of a warranted and responsible explanation of a variety of literary and informational texts.
ELA4R1i. Identifies rhyme and rhythm, repetition, similes, and sensory images in poems.

SS5H1 - The student will explain the causes, major events, and consequences of the Civil War.
SS5H9 - The student will trace important developments in America since 1975 ...and the War on Terrorism in response to September 11, 2001.
SS4H8 - The student will describe the importance of key people, events, and developments between 1950 - 1975.

SKL2 - Students will compare the similarities and differences in groups and organisms.
SKL2b. Explain the similarities and differences in plants (color, size, appearance, etc.)

SKE1 - Students will describe time patterns (such as day to night and night to day) and objects (such as sun, moon, and stars) in the day and night sky.

ELA5R1 - The student demonstrates comprehension and shows evidence of a warranted and responsible explanation of a variety of literary and informational texts.

	Informational	Ashanti to Zulu:African Traditions	Margaret Musgrove/Leo & Diane Dillon	3 - 6	Have each student select a tribe from the book and research it.	This book tells of customs from 26 tribes using each letter of the alphabet to name a tribe.
	Historical Fiction	The Man Who Walked Between The Towers	Mordecai Gerstein	2 - 5	Have the students research the events of 9/11/01 and write an essay on their feelings. SS5H9a.	This tells the true story of Philippe Petit's walk between the Twin Towers

Informational	Amazing Bats	Seymour Simon	3 - 5	Have students pick out a bat from the book and draw a bookcover using their selected bat.	This is a book with information on all types of bats.
Informational	What Presidents Are Made Of.	Hanock Piven	2 - 5	Have students create one of the presidents as he is in the book using the various supplies shown. SS5H	This book contains trivia about many of our predominantly known presidents.
