The Olympic Peninsula
I read The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood a few years ago.  A young girl was narrating the story while she walked the shores of Lake Quinault on the Olympic Peninsula.  Her descriptions of Lake Quinault were inspiring and moving.  It was also disturbing to read her words because she grew up in Louisiana, and she knew more than I did about Quinault - in fact, I'm ashamed to say that I had never been to Lake Quinault.  So I asked my brother, Mike, if he could take me to the Peninsula so I could see it for myself.

There is a beautiful lodge on the lake.  I'm going to spend a few nights there sometime.  I had an eye out for mosquitoes, fire ants, water moccasins, and gnats, but I couldn't find any.  Gosh, the PNW must be different than Georgia!

The Lodge looks just like the pictures in the brochures.  It is gorgeous.  There is a huge lawn that is perfect for throwing the Frisbee.  Mike is looking towards the lake thinking about steelhead.

While sitting in front of the fireplace, I was dreaming of a white Christmas.  The Lodge would be a great place to be snowed in for days and days.  There is a quaint mercantile in back of the Lodge.

Mike loves fishing.  He has told me lots of "fish stories" the past 30 years about the steelhead he has caught on the Sol-Duc, Bogachiel, and Hoh Rivers (in all of his stories, it's always the big one that got away).  He took dad steelheading on the Bogachiel about 20 years ago, and dad is still talking about it.  I'm waiting for Mike to take me.  Thanks for showing me the rivers, Mike, but I want to go steelheading.  Can we take Shannon, Bill, and Lyle too?

Mike took me to Kalaloch Lodge which is perched on a bluff overlooking the Pacific.  It was nice to see the Pacific again.  If you look over Mike's shoulder, you can see where the Bogachiel empties into the Pacific.  I've also included a couple of shots of the Sol Duc River and a snapshot of Crescent Lake as we drove by on our way back to Kingston to catch the ferry.
