AWARDS FOR BOOK DESIGN

AWARD OF OVERALL EXCELLENCE

Increase

Lia Purpura
University of Georgia Press
Design: Erin Kirk New
Jacket Illustration: "Maternity" by Milton Avery
Printer: Maple-Vail Book Group

This is a beautiful little book from its rich dust jacket to the final page. The size of the book makes it compelling to hold. The typesetting is lovely, allowing ample space between each chronicle entry to provide breathing space. This work stood clearly above the rest as a unified work.
AWARD OF EXCELLENCE

One Family

Vaughn Sills
University of Georgia Press
Design: Kyong Choe
Printer: C & C Offset

This book, with its hauntingly melodic images, speaks to the reader, illustrating the rawness of the Toole clan as well as their emotional depth. The lay-out supports the photographs, especially the use of unobtrusive type and the soft edges around the images. The designer rose to the challenge of letting the photographs speak for themselves and presenting the engaging text in an interesting fashion. The image of the little girl on the jacket - her flowered dress mimicking the old fabric of the chairs - stays with the viewer permanently.

AWARD OF MERIT

River Song: a Journey Down the Chattahoochee and Apalachicola Rivers

Joe and Monica Cook
University of Alabama Press in cooperation with
The Historic Chattahoochee Commission
Design: John Langston
Printer: Pacifica Communications

This is a lovely book loaded with lush photographs from Joe and Monica Cook. The relationship between the photographs and the text on the page is simple and clean. The book is well designed with readable text. The opening photograph with the words "River Song" superimposed creates a misty and compelling introduction to this engaging book.

AWARD OF MERIT

Come Worship With Me: a Journey Through the Church Year

Ruth L. Boling
Presbyterian Publishing Corp./Geneva Press
Design and illustration: Tracey Dahle Carrier
Printer: Midas Printing

The powerful illustrations explode off the page and then draw the reader to the easily readable text. The icons repeated throughout the book are clean and make excellent pointers to the well-organized information. As an introduction for young people to the ecclesiastical seasons, the book is personal yet thorough.

AWARD OF MERIT

All the Lost Girls: Confessions of a Southern Daughter

Patricia Foster
University of Alabama Press
Design: Michele Myatt Quinn
Printer: Thomson-Shore

The recurring motif of the falling leaf, which in some way illustrates the idea of "loss," is a nice feature to this design. The lavender screen on the jacket complements the purple boards, and the inside type design is light and comfortably spaced, all making for an engaging read.

AWARD OF HONORABLE MENTION

Louisiana Faces: Images From a Renaissance
Photographs by Philip Gould, text by Jason Berry
Louisiana State University Press
Design: Laura Roubique Gleason
Printer: Dai Nippon Printing

The explosive and articulate photographs jump off the pages of this energetic, oversized book. This volume successfully conveys a renaissance and re-energizing of the peoples, primarily in the arts, of Louisiana. Powerful photos with good sturdy typography, arranged thoughtfully on the page, make this book a delight to read.

AWARD OF EXCELLENCE IN DUST JACKET DESIGN

Stories With a Moral: Literature and Society in Nineteenth-Century Georgia

Michael Price
University of Georgia Press
Book Jacket Design: Walton Harris

Keeping in mind that jacket design serves as both a marketing tool and as an artistic representation of a book's content, this jacket is excellent with sophisticated alignment of type and photograph. The blue pops out in stark contrast to the black background, which is especially eye-catching. The image of the African American older man speaking to the white boy, an illustration by A. B. Frost, serves as a great representation of the content.

SPECIAL RECOGNITION FOR PAPERBACK COVER

The Piety of John Witherspoon
L. Gordon Tait
Presbyterian Publishing Corp./Geneva Press
Book cover design: Lisa Buckley

The ghostly visage of John Witherspoon rises from the fog of the front cover. This strange jacket compels a reader to attention. The choice of colors is subtle and electric. This is a book that immediately tugs at the reader.
