Camp Glenrochie Closes 50th Consecutive Season
Dr. Frank Reade
Camp Director
Dr. Frank R. Reade, the founder’s son, has been in charge of Camp Glenrochie since his father, Willoughby Reade, retired as director in 1946.
Carrying on in the family tradition, Dr. Reade and his wife took over the operations of the summer camp for girls.
It was at Glenrochie that Dr. Reade met his wife. He spent most of his summers there helping his mother run the camp. In 1915, Jean Cunningham, from Savannah, Ga., arrived as a camper. Later, she was a counsellor and, finally, she became Mrs. Frank Reade.
Dr. Reade was born at “The Meadows,” near Abingdon. He graduated from the Episcopal High School, near Alexandria, then attended the University of Virginia and took his Ph. D. in English. After teaching in the Episcopal High School, he became professor of English at Georgia Tech.
For fifteen years, he was president of the Georgia State Women’s College at Valdosta, Ga., and is now president emeritus.
