About the Author

Pat Mora was born in El Paso, Texas on January 19, 1942. She has three grown children. She has written more than twenty-five children books. Between 1982 and 2006, Pat has received numerous awards, honors, and fellowships. She has received three Academic Honors, three Fellowships, nine Literary Awards, four Adult Book Awards, one Young Adult Book Award, and twelve Children Book Awards. She has traveled and continues to travel many places to teach young writers.

About the Book

The Night the Moon Fell is a book that tells a Belize legend about how the Milky Way was created. The book tells about the moon, (Luna)  sitting high in the night sky just humming away, when she suddenly falls from the sky, lands in the ocean, and breaks into several pieces.

Technology Connection
Technologies that will be used in this lesson include: computer with Internet connection, a picture developed using a computer drawing program, and a designed website that includes a computer painted picture related to the book The Night the Moon Fell. We will also use the computer lab for this lesson.

Procedure:
Part I Step One: Introduction
1. Work with a small group of students (2-5).
Introduction questions. (Introduction questions are for the teacher, to find out about the students’ previous knowledge of the subject content.
2. Show the children the map. Ask them questions such as:
  • What is this called?
  • What colors do you see on it?
  • What does the blue represent?  Tell them that the big blue areas are oceans and the small ones are lakes, or rivers, etc.
  • What do these many colors represent?
  • Can anyone point to our country?
  • What about to our state Georgia?
  • We are going to learn about a Belize’s legend on how the Milky Way was created. 
  • Does anyone know where Belize is?
    The teacher points to the place on the map and then asks a child to point to Georgia
  • Is Belize far away or near to us in Georgia?
  • Do you have go over water to get to this place from our place?

(Estimated time 10 minutes)

Step Two: Teaching the Primary Learning Outcomes Language Experience Activity
1.
Go to the computer and your Lesson 1 Global Diversity Activity website at http://www.valdosta.edu/~mkking/global.html . Students should be at their own computers. 
2.  Let children take turns pointing to things in your picture.  They can also try to point to certain words on the screen.
3   Read each question under the Paint drawing.  Ask them to respond to your questions. 
4   Have a large piece of chart paper with each question, already prepared with the questions listed with spaces to write the children's responses underneath.
5. As each child responds to the questions, write exactly what they are saying when they make their responses. Write students’ names next to each response.

List your 3 questions here:
1. Point to the fish in the sky, what are the fish doing in the sky?
2.  Why is the moon smiling?
3. Tell a story about the painting?
4. Why are the white streams coming from the ocean?   <>


Part 2
1.  Read the paragraph under the questions to the children. Then show them the book.
2.  Do a BRIEF picture walk and talk about the book
3.  Tell them the (title) The Night the Moon Fell; (author) Pat Mora, (illustrator) Domi.
4.  Read the story to the children.
    (10-15 minutes)

Closure:
1. After you read the story, review their responses made prior to reading them the story and compare their responses with the actual events in the story. 
2. Ask them to tell you some things they learned from the story.
3.  Do an activity that relates to the story.  Describe the activity that you will do.

The students will draw a picture with the Paint Program on the computer.

Now I will give them the directions.

Teacher: The story talked about how the Milky Way was created.  According to the story the Milky Way was created when the moon fell from the sky and into the ocean.  Use the Paint Program on the computer to draw a picture of an important event in the story.  Write a sentence about the picture.

Closure: 

  • After reviewing children’s picture, I will ask each of them to tell me something about their picture. 
  • Exhibit children's work or let them show the things they made to others.
