There are many ways for a literary work to portray its theme or themes. This will depend primarily on what kind of book you are reading.  If a book is fiction, non-fiction, or a fable, this will greatly shape the theme being portrayed.

In a story of fiction, the theme is not typically intended to preach or teach anything in particular. As in the fiction books above by William Sleator, the theme is up to the reader to extract the from the characters, events, and settings that make up the story.  In a fable, the theme will usually be in the form of a moral, such as in “The Three Little Pigs” or “The Boy Who Cried Wolf”.  You can find more on themes in everyday literature by visiting learner.org.
