Research
Interests:
My research focuses on the narrated landscapes of Prince Maximilian of Wied (1782-1867), a German explorer and naturalist who traveled through the United States in 1832-34, accompanied by the Swiss painter Karl Bodmer (1809-1893). Other research interests include: community development along Highway 41; the Hispanization of the South; geography of Europe and the Middle East; and the diffusion of Turkish culture and businesses throughout Germany.

"Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness - all foes to real understanding. Likewise, tolerance or broad, wholesome charitable views
of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in our little corner of the earth all one's lifetime." Mark Twain
"The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge." Stephen Hawking
"He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt. He has been given a large brain by mistake, since for him the spinal cord would fully suffice. This disgrace to civilization should be done away with at once. Heroism at command, senseless brutality, deplorable love-of-country stance, how violently I hate all this, how despicable an ignoble war is; I would rather be torn to shreds than be a part of so base an action! It is my conviction that killing under the cloak of war is nothing but an act of murder." Albert Einstein
"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." George Santayana
"The hottest place in Hell is reserved for those who in time of crisis remain neutral." Dante Alighieri
"Where they burn books, so too will they in the end burn human beings." Heinrich Heine
