My Service-Learning Page

As part of the FYE (Freshman Year Experience) Program we have to donate some of our personal time to organizations or activities around our community.  Here are some examples of my experiences.

Good Will
Thanks to FYE, I found it in myself (and in my closet) to muster up some items for donations.  After working at the Food Bank I realized that there are people out there who need some things more than I do.  So directly due to volunteering I have now made two very large donations to Good Will. Each donation consisting of shoes, clothing and toys.

Second Harvest Food Bank
Thursday, March 18 I went to second harvest Food Bank and volunteered two hours of my time.  They were some of the most rewarding two hours of my entire life.  The people that I worked with were friendly and helpful.  In case any of you don't know, the Second Harvest Food Bank takes donated and damaged food items and processes them to those in need.  If you ever find the time and want to help your community out I would most definitely suggest trying this cause.

Challenger League
They YMCA host the Challenger League annually.  I have been through soccer, t-ball and basketball with this particular group and I must say it is the greatest feeling ever.  When you participate in the Challenger League, you don't have to do anything but have fun and play around with people that only want to play with you.  Being active in the Challenger League has made me some life long friends and unforgettable moments.

The Haven
One of the most rewarding experiences to date would have to be when our class adopted a family.  Five boys and one mother become a part of our class and we donated many items and money to help them.  The young boys received toys such as footballs, action figures and a bike.  The mother on the other hand received a set of earrings and clothes.  Mrs. Tillman's office was literally filled to the brim with those seasons tidings and I know for a fact the family will never forget us.

Trick or Treat
Thanks to the students at FYE, lead by Mrs. Tillman, Halloween last year was a happy one for many children.  Some students dressed up while others donated candy, we all participated in some small way.  The children of teachers and needy families were all invited to come trick or treat with the FYE volunteers.  They were all so cute!
