Fish
Fossils
Can
you identify a fish fossil?
S3E2-Students
will
investigate fossils as evidence
of organisms that lived long ago.

Brief
Overview:
In this section students will examine pictures and
documentation
that discusses different kinds of fish fossils. The activities listed
on my site will introduce children to facts about fish fossils that
they
may have never discussed before. This way, if they ever study about
fossils
in their later years of schooling they will already have a strong
understanding of them. Also, if they come across any type of fish
fossil they can compare it to some of the fish fossils found on the web
sites
listed below to see if they can identify it.
6 Web Sites
About Fish Fossils:
Describes
four types of fish fossils that where found in the Green River
Formation located
in western Colorado, eastern Utah, and southwestern Wyoming. (There is
map link on this web site that shows the exact location.)
Cretaceous
Needle Fish Fossil
This web site provides
many links to different kinds of fish fossils including the cretaceous
needle fish fossil (shown above). After clicking on the link a detailed
description is available on each fossil.
Fish
fossils from the Green River Basin
Describes more fish fossils
from the Green River Basin (different fossils than in the first web
site listed above).
Fish Fossils in Lebanon,
China, and Brazil
Lists different fish fossils according to location: Lebanon, China, and
Brazil. Also there is a link labeled: "Wyoming Fish Page" that
contains interesting information.
Knightia

Describes Knightia fish fossils. Also, see the link "Buried in Sediments" to get a
detailed description of a fossil.
Fossil

Fossil Matching/ Match the fish fossil picture
that was printed out from one of the web sites above to the correct
fish picture.
PLO
The student will be able to match the fish fossil pictures to the fish
pictures.
Materials
* 12 Pictures of fish
fossils printed out from the web site: Fish Fossils in Lebanon,
China, and Brazil
* 12 Pictures
of live fish (one for every fish fossil picture)
Procedures
* Go over the web site with the students make sure they understand the
information about each fossil listed on the web site.
* Have them work in groups of 3 to 5 people. Pass-out 12 pictures of
fossils and 12 pictures of fish to each group.
* Ask them to match the the fish fossil pictures to the correct fish
pictures. Once they have found all the correct pares have their group
raise all of their hands to let the teacher know that they need their
matches checked for accuracy. Walk around the room and make sure
each group is on the right track while you are waiting for them to
finish.
Product
The students used the fish fossil pictures and information found on
the web site to match the correct fish pictures.

Procedures
* First
go through all the web sites above and make sure you tell the students
up-font that they will need to pick their favorite one. Let them brows
through them and encourage them to ask questions if needed.
* Once they have picked the fossil that most interests them, pass-out
the fossil coloring sheet to give them them something to do while they
wait for the rest of the class to pick a fossil. Then, explain that
they will be writing a detailed
paragraph on their
favorite fish fossil. Explain to them that they cannot copy the
information to form their paragraph, but they can summarize and add to
it.
Product
After
finishing this activity the students will have
described, in a detailed paragraph, their
favorite fish fossil. They
will be able to take this paragraph home to read it to their parents.
The fossil picture will be displayed on the classroom bulletin board.
Title/Brief Description
Sculpting Fossils/ Each student will sculpt their
very own fish fossil from the Green River.
PLO
The
students will read about fish fossils in the Green River and sculpt one
out of modeling clay.
Materials
* Modeling clay
* Web sites:
Green
River Fish Fossils
Fish
fossils from the Green River Basin
Procedures
* Read
about the Green River Fish Fossils in the two web sites listed in
materials above. Assign each student a fish fossil from the pictures on
the web sites.
* Have them use the modeling clay to mold and sculpt their fish fossil
to match the one assigned to them on the web site.
Product
After
this activity is compleate, the students will have to stand in front of
the class and state the name of their fish fossil and one fact about
it. The students will then display their fossils on a vacant shelf in
the room.

Title: Marine Aquarium
Published
by: Encare
* This
software displays 26 species of fish, it's like having your own aquatic
paradise through your PC. When looking at the fossils on the web sites
listed above the students could match the live fish found on the
software to the fossil found on the web sites above.
* One problem I might have would be that some of the fish
shown in the software would not match-up to the fossils displayed in
the web sites.

Title: All
Aboard! Kindergarten Adventures
Published
by: Encare
* This
software includes four exciting kids activities that combine learning
and fun. The activity that relates to my lesson would be: "Freddi Fish: The Case of
the Hogfish Rustlers of Briny Gulch". After learning about the
fish fossils in the 3 activities listed above, this software is a fun
way that incorporates fish to encourage deductive and
inductive reasoning.
* One problem
I may encounter would be that this software is made for Kindergartners
and my web sites and three activities listed about are geared more
toward older children (3rd Grade). If the older students were to use
this software
it would not benefit them.
Title: Deep Sea Tycoon
Published by: E.B. Carlson
Marketing Inc..
* This software provides an epic
underwater
adventure/quest through 30 missions of colorful ocean reefs. After the
students go on the deep sea adventure where
they will observe many fish, have them draw what they think the fossils
of the fish would look like.
* There may be a problem with the students who have no
imagination and lack creativity, because this is an art project.
Title: Microsoft Word
2003
Published by: Microsoft
* This software is the
latest version of the best-selling word processor. The students will be
asked to use this software program to write a one paragraph on one of
the fish fossils found in the web sites above. (Including: how, when,
and where the fish fossil was formed.)
* It may be a boring software program because students tend to
use this program in excess.
Title: Microsoft Power
Point 2003
Published by: Microsoft
* This software program lets students work with decorative slides
to formate information. Use the information on the web site above: Fish Fossils in Lebanon,
China, and Brazil to construct a power point presentation. Make
sure the headings include the locations: Lebanon, China, and
Brazil and
describe/summarize the fish fossils found in each one.
* One problem that the students may have when operating this
software program would be that it is sometimes difficult to operate.
There are many options that can be confusing when creating each
slide when using this software.
A big thank you to all the helpful
web sites I used to make this page possible!
