Geological History
The history of South Africa is ancient. Some rocks, about four billion years old, are reckoned to be amongst the oldest in the worlds. Some 180 million years ago, the then subcontinent of Gondwanaland broke up and drifted apart to form the continents of South America, Australia, the Antarctic and the subcontinent of India. Continual geological processes have since shaped the huge African mainland block into its present form. These processes are still happening today eroding away the deep continental edge.
