Procedures:
Step One: Introduction
Have a small group of students go to a computer.  Explain to students that you are going to use the computer to read a Mini-Research eBook about the different jobs that people within our community do.  List 2 or more questions that introduce students to your Mini-Research eBook that will establish a connection to students' prior knowledge by asking them:
1. "What are some of the different jobs that you know people have?"
2. "What are your mommy and daddy's jobs in the community?"
3. "What job do you dream of having when you grow up?"
Today we are going to read an eBook on the Internet.  I have made a special Mini-Research eBook on the Internet for your class.  (During discussion have students turn around away from the computer to interact.)

Estimated Time for Step One:
5 minutes

Step Two Teaching the Primary Learning Outcomes:
(Students will sit at the computer where they can control the mouse and computer.)  (Explain to students the process of the lesson.)  We are going to read my Mini-Research eBook and visit several websites.

Check for understanding
Students, with teacher assistance, will read the Mini-Research eBook, explore, and discuss the information in the four linking websites that go with the Mini-Research eBook.  Ask students guiding questions about the important concepts in the Mini-Research eBook and the linking websites.   List four or more questions from each of your linking websites that will guide your students to gain information for your PLO.
1.  What did the police officer say their jobs main goal is?
2.
What is one thing a firefighter does in the community?
3.  What is a doctor's main purpose?
4.  What does a teacher help students do?

Practice and feedback related to the PLO
Read the Mini-Research eBook project to students.  Explain to students that they are going to help replace the communities lost job papers, and they will make a fingerprint picture to show several jobs that many people have. Tell the students that the information that they will need to complete their Mini-Research eBook project is listed and connected in the Mini-Research eBook activity.  Review the information in the linked website in the Mini-Research eBook activity with the students to emphasize interesting and important information students will need to complete mission project.

Jobs of People in Our Community
A disaster has occured! The papers describing the jobs of people within our community have been lost. The community needs your help to replace these missing papers. You will need to provide a picture and title of the four jobs that we talked about today, including police officer, firefighter, doctor, and teacher.
Lesson 1 Activity

1. You will need to get a piece of paper, ink pad, and colored pencils or crayons, that the teacher will have provided.
2. You will need to fold the paper hamburger style once and then again hamburger style. After opening up the folded paper, you will have four squares.
3. In each square you must show one of the four jobs we have talked about. These include a fire fighter, police officer, doctor, and teacher. Click on any of those jobs to look back for more information.
4. You will use the ink pad and make a thumb print on the paper. Your thumb print will be the body of the person. You will then use colored pencils  or crayons to draw on the thumbprint and show what this person does at their job.
5. Be sure to label the pictures of the people with their job titles.

[Students will write (or dictate to teacher) information to be included in their Mini-Research eBook project.  While students are completing Mini-Research eBook project, teacher will observe students and give assistance when needed.]

Estimated Time for Step Two:
35 minutes

Step Three
Closure:
Have students discuss their Mini-Research eBook activity and information they found on the Internet.  Tell students that your Mini-Research eBook Website is on the Internet and they can visit the website at school or home.  Explain to students that you are going to put their pictures and information on the Internet and they will be able to share their mission projects with their friends and family.  (If possible teacher should take brief notes during the lesson and concluding discussions to be added later to the assessment and reflections in lesson plan.)

Estimated Time for Step Three:

Descriptions of Students' Evidence that Illustrate the Achieved Performance Level of the PLO
(* To receive full credit description must include minimum of two sentences and a detailed example of the students' evidence.)

The student was able to identify and describe the jobs that people do. She was able to use her thumbprint to make the pictures of each community helper. Also, the student drew the outfit and background images that helped show different aspects of each job. For example, on the part about the firefighter, she used her thumbprint to make the firefighter. She use red and black to draw the firefighters outfit. Also, she drew a firetruck and house on fire in the background.

The student was able to identify the jobs that people do, but struggled with showing details in the pictures of what the jobs are. The student needed a lot of the teacher's guidance in help and still did not fully describe each job. For example, in his artwork he was able to use his thumbprint to show the people doing their jobs, but none of the community helpers are wearing outfits, so all the peopl look the same. He tried to draw a few things in the background, such as a teachers whiteboard, but the teacher had to lead him in the direction of what to draw on the background.

1. Comment on your teaching of how your Mini-Research eBook Lesson created learning experiences and activities that implemented the use a variety of resources and technologies. (*To receive full credit description must include a minimum of two sentences and a detailed example.)

My teaching allowed students to use the computer to go through the ebook and used websites to give the students different varieties of uses of technology. I did a good job at teaching the students how to use the eBook. For example, I showed the students where the "Next" button was and how to use the links to go to the websites. Also, I used the eBook and links to websites to teach the students about the different community helpers. The students loved the part about the firefighter, especially because of the linked video. I feel that the students did the best on their artwork because the video really reached them.

2. State evidence to show that your students gained knowledge during your Mini-Research eBook Lesson. (*To receive full credit description must include a minimum of two sentences and a detailed example.)

The students loved the pictures of the people doing their jobs and how they were real and not cartoon. I feel that the students connected when they saw the picture of their teacher, Mrs. Thompson, under the community helper teacher. It really helped the students to relate who a teacher really is. Also, I observed that students really liked learning about the firefighter. I believe that the students learned the most from this page of the eBook. The students did their best artwork on this community helper and was able to describe the firefighter the best.

3. Give at least one suggestion that would lead to improving your teaching practices and student achievement. (*To receive full credit description must include a minimum of two sentences and a detailed example.)

To help improve this lesson I could have discussed more of the outfits that each of the community helpers wear. This would have really helped the students for their thumbprint activity. Although, one of the students did notice the clothing in the pictures without guidance and drew them in her picture. For example, the students and I could have pointed out in the pictures what all you would find each of the community helpers wearing.
