The 1930's:
What in the world is going on?


Annotation: As you know, Ty Cobb was among the first ever to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936. The 1930's was a happening time for America and other places around the world!  In this lesson we will explore this great decade to find out about some of the events, people, places, and inventions that surrounded the 1930's. 

Primary Learning Outcome: The students will be able to reserach information about the 1930's Era by using the Internet.  The students will be able to use an Internet reserach guide to help them organize their information.

        Standard: Locates and utilizes information from a variety of sources, e.g.,      books, newspapers, atlases, glossaries, photographs, laser- disks, computer software, others. 


 
 
 

Total Duration: 2 class periods

Materials and Equipment: 

  • Access to a computer lab with 12 computers (Internet Access)
  • 12 Internet reasearch guides.
  • 1 LCD Projector.
  • Each student will need a pencil.
  • 1 Video on the 1930's Era
  • 1 VCR
  • 1 Television


Technology Connection: 
VCR, Television, LCD Projector, Computer with Internet. 



Procedures: Day 1
1.  I will discuss with the class the location and date of the founding of the Baseball Hall of Fame.  We will also discuss how the Baseball Hall of Fame was established in the 1930's.  I will remind the students that Ty Cobb was the 1st player to be inducted in 1936. 

2.  I will use the LCD projector to present a pre-selected website to the class on the Baseball Hall of Fame.  We will talk about how the players are chosen for the Hall of Fame. 

3.I will show a video on the 1930's,  and then discuss the Great Depression and how it affected every aspect of life in America and other countries. 



Day 2
4.  I will give each student an Internet research guide.  I will tell the students that they will be responsible for researching a person from the 1930's or an event that happened during this time.  The students will draw a topic out of a hat so that each student will have a different topic to research.  There will also be a pre-selected website for them to use. 

5.  The students will be accompanied to the computer lab to begin their reserach.  The teacher will allow the students to work independently with guidance provided.

6.  The students will be writing a 3 pargraph report on their topic in the remaining part of the class period.  The students will use their Internet research guide to help them write their reports.  The students will eventually present their report to the class accompanied by a visual aid. Assessment:

  • Students will be evaluted on completion of their Internet research guide, 3 paragraph report, and class partcipation in the dicussions and internet activity.
Accomodation:
 
  • Some students who are lower readers may be paired with a partner for the Internet activity.
  • Some students may write 1 paragraph instead of 3 paragraphs about their topic.
