What
in the world is going on?

5th Grade Social Studies Strand: Core Social Studies Skills 45 Topic: Civic Participation Standard: Works within a group, following set rules of procedures to complete an assigned task. 5th Grade Language Arts Strand: Written Communication 42 Topic: Writing Standard: Writes selections of three or more paragraphs about a topic. 4th Grade Social Studies Strand: Core Social Studies Skills 30 Topic: Information Processing Standard: Locates and utilizes information from a variety of sources, e.g., books, newspapers, atlases, glossaries, photographs, laser- disks, computer software, others.
1. I will discuss with the class the location and date of the founding of the Baseball Hall of Fame. We will also discuss how the Baseball Hall of Fame was established in the 1930's. I will remind the students that Ty Cobb was the 1st player to be inducted in 1936. 2. I will use the LCD projector to present a pre-selected website to the class on the Baseball Hall of Fame. We will talk about how the players are chosen for the Hall of Fame. 3.I will show a video
on the 1930's, and then discuss the Great Depression and how it affected
every aspect of life in America and other countries.
Day 2 4. I will give each student an Internet research guide. I will tell the students that they will be responsible for researching a person from the 1930's or an event that happened during this time. The students will draw a topic out of a hat so that each student will have a different topic to research. There will also be a pre-selected website for them to use. 5. The students will be accompanied to the computer lab to begin their reserach. The teacher will allow the students to work independently with guidance provided. 6. The students
will be writing a 3 pargraph report on their topic in the remaining part
of the class period. The students will use their Internet research
guide to help them write their reports. The students will eventually
present their report to the class accompanied by a visual aid. ( See Lesson
