Annotation:
This lesson is a Geography lesson on the state of Georgia, the home of Ty Cobb, the Georgia Peach.  In this lesson the students will explore the state of Georgia and learn about  different aspects of life in this state.  The students will explore the people, land and climate, economy, government and history of the state of Georgia.  Each day the students will explore a different aspect of life in Georgia.  They will record each day's findings in their learning journal.

Primary learning Outcome:  The students will  use the internet website DiscoverySchool.com to research facts about Georgia.  The students will be able to record their information in a series of 5 learning journal entries.

4th Grade Social Studies
Strand:  Geography
5    Topic:  Regions
Standard:  Identifies and described different types of regions found within the United States that can be categorized according to climatic, physical, political, cultural and economic.

5th Grade Technology Integration
Strand:  Research
12    Topic:  Research
Standard:  Uses basic research techniques with teacher guidance
12.1    Recognizes and uses technology and telecommunication tools to locate information.
 

Total Duration: 5 days

Materials:
- 6 computers with Internet Access.
- 1 learning journal for each student (The
  teacher will make these for the students.
  You will need 5 pieces of notebook paper,
  and a front and back cover.)
- Each student will need a pencil.

Technology:The students will be using the Internet for this activity.  The students will be visiting DiscoverySchool.com to gather information on the state of Georgia.

Procedures:
1.  The teacher will tell to the students that Ty Cobb is known as the "Georgia Peach" because he was born in Narrows, GA and spent most of his life living in Augusta, GA.

2.  The teacher will tell the students that they will be learning more about the state of Georgia by using the Internet.

3.  The teacher will have each student find a partner and go to one of the computers.  There are 12 students in the classroom.  There will be 1 computer for every 2 students.

4.  The teacher will have the students log on to this website:  DiscoverySchool.com

5.  The teacher will lead the students through the website until they reach the page with the information on Georgia.

People
Land and Climate
Government
Economy
History

-Each day the students will explore a different aspect  of the state of Georgia.

6.  Each day the students will write 1 learning journal entry.  They must write an entire page on what they have gathered.

7.  The students will turn in a completed learning journal with 5 entries at the end of the week.
 

Assessment:
-Participation in the Internet activity.
-Completed Learning Journal with an entry for each of these aspects:  History, Economy, Land and Climate, People, and Government.

Accomodation:Students who have a difficult time reading will be partnered with a
more proficient reader.  They will have the website read aloud to them.  Students who have a difficult time with writing may only write 1 paragraph for each journal entry.

Modification:Forclassrooms with only 1 computer, students will work in pairs at the computer while the other students read teacher selected books on the History of Baseball.
