Technology Connection:
Technologies that will be used in this lesson include:

Procedures:
Step One: Introduction
Have a small group of students go to a computer.  Explain to students that you are going to use the computer to find out information about nutrition.  List 2 or more questions that introduce students to topic of dinosaurs that establish a connection to students' prior knowledge by asking them: "Have you ever wondered if the food you eat is nutritious?"  "Can you tell me something that you know about food safety?"   Today we are going to learn about food safety by visiting websites on the Internet and we will do a fun activity to learn more about dinosaurs.  I have made a special nutrition page for your class.  (During discussion have students turn around away from the computer to interact.)

Estimated Time for Step One:
5 minutes

Step Two Teaching the Primary Learning Outcomes:
(Have students sit at the computer where they can control the mouse and computer.)  (Explain to students the process of the lesson.)  After we visit several websites about food safety and nutrition then you will pretend to be a chef and create a nutritious meal.  Then you will paste your food on paper and make a collage..

Check for understanding
Have students explore and discuss the information in each of the 3 pre-selected websites.  Ask students guiding questions about the important concepts in each of the visited websites.  (Save "Food Safety" website to use in Mission Project.)  List three or more questions.
1. Can you name two of the Food Groups on the Food Guide Pyramid?
2. What are some examples of the foods in the two groups?
3
. What is the first step in washing your hands?

Practice and feedback related to the PLO
Read mission project to students.  Explain to students that they are going to be a chef.  Discuss nutrition, food safety and hand washing with the students. Tell the students that the information that they will need to complete their mission project is listed and connected in the mission activity.  Visit website for information for mission project, "Food Safety."  Discuss the information in the linked website in the mission activity with the students to emphasize interesting and important information students will need to complete mission project.

[Students will follow food safety rules and then create a nutritious meal. Students will then make a collage out of the food they chose for their nutritious meal for the mission project.  While students are completing mission project, teacher will observe students and give assistance when needed.]

Mission Activity

Pretend that you are a chef.  You are assigned to prepare a nutritious meal for the King and Queen.  You must choose from the ingredients of nutritious and not nutritious food.  Be sure to follow the food safety rules and wash you hands before you start or the King and Queen will be very upset!!

Mission Steps
1. Go to this website and learn the food safety steps to washing your hands.
2. Go to this website and learn about nutrition and the Food Guide Pyramid.  Read through the article and then click on the Food Guide Pyramid Game to learn more.
3. Follow the food safety steps before you create your meal.
4. Create a nutritious meal using the "ingredients"(paper cut-outs of different foods) provided and place it on the royal plate (paper plates) to be served to the King and Queen.

Estimated Time for Step Two:

35 minutes

Step Three
Closure:
Have students discuss their mission project of their meals, collages and information they found on the Internet about nutrition.  Tell students that your topic quest page is on the Internet and they can visit the website at school or home to learn more about nutrition and food safety.  Explain to students that you are going to put their meals and collages on the Internet and they will be able to share their mission projects with their friends and family.  (If possible teacher should take brief notes during the lesson and concluding discussions to be added later to the assessment and reflections in lesson plan.)

Estimated Time for Step Three:
5 minutes

Assessment:
A. Technology Integration
Student will be assessed through observation while using the computer with teacher guidance to do research and find information for the mission project.
Satisfactory: Student is able to use the computer with teacher guidance to do research and find information for the mission project.
Unsatisfactory: Student is not able to use the computer with teacher guidance to do research and find information for the mission project.

Accommodation:
Links for Accommodations for Special Students
1. One of my special students has a behavior disability.  He cannot sit and do his for for more than a minute and does not pay attention.  This student will need additional help and asssitance.

2. List the specific URL address of one Internet resource website, where you found information to assist you to work with your special needs student. Information for assisting special students:  Links for Accommodations for Special Students or you can do a search. List the specific URL information for your special student.  Be sure it links.

3. Provide preferential seating during whole group tasks to enhance attention and support.  Also I would make the lesson segements shorter so the student's attention would not wonder.

Reflections: (For Electronic Portfolio Standard #1 Knowledge of Subject Matter)
1. a. Describe and give examples of how your TopicQuest lesson created learning experiences and activities that made subject matter meaningful for your students.
In the TopicQuest lesson i used a variety of learning experiences.  The students had a chance to tell what they knew about nutrition and food safety.  We pretended to wash our hands several times which they enjoyed. They were able to answer questions and use the computer to find out information they did not know.

    b. Describe and give examples of how your TopicQuest lesson illustrated your understanding of content and tools of inquiry.
I looked through the websites and choose the ones most approate for the students to go to during the lesson. I talked to the students about they types of food I liked to eat and what nuturition meant to me.  I also told they how I learned to wash my hands.

    c. Describe and give examples of how students were engaged in learning and responded during your lesson.
They enjoyed going to the different websites and playing the games.  They answered the question I asked and Jermaine was very interested in the activity and talking about food.

  2. Describe and give examples of how the students achieved the assessment of your lesson. Give the achievement level (satisfactory or unsatisfactory) for each assessment for each of your students.
    A. Technology Integration:
Student assessed through observation while using the computer with teacher guidance to do research and find information for the mission project.
Student One: SATISFACTORY:  Essence did very well using the computer and showed good computer skills throughout the lesson.  She also did a very nice job with her collage and describing why she chose those foods.
Student Two: SATISFACTORY: Jermain did very well behavioral wise as well as achedemic.  He did very well on his collage and answering the questions that I asked him for understanding.

3. Describe what you would do differently and why if you taught this lesson again.
The students attention span seem to have been very short that day. I that case I would shorten the different sections so they would always be doing something rather than me talking alot.
