Geography Lesson
Where did the Children of the Holocaust Live?

Annotation:
This is a hands-on lesson.  Students will learn the location of several countries where Jewish children lived before (and some after) the Jews went to the concentration camps.  The students will also be able to locate some of the places where concentration camps were located.

Primary Learning Outcomes:
1.  Students will be able to locate areas on a map of Europe.
2. Students will use an atlas to gather the information for their map.

Standard: Uses atlases to locate and compare maps.

Materials and Equipment:
    -Copy of a map of Europe for each student
    -Map of Europe for the overhead
    -Colored pencils for each student
    -Colored Visa-Viv for the overhead
    -Atlas for each student

Procedures:
Step One:
The teacher will place her copy of the map on the overhead projector.  She will list on the board the names of the countries that the students are going to label.  The places are as follows: Albania, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Crete, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Holland, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Libya, Norway, Poland, Russia, Yugoslavia.  The places that the students will locate for the concentration camps are as follows: Weimar, Germany; Belsen, Germany; Warsaw, Poland; and Prague, Czechoslvakia.

Step Two:
The teacher will label Germany, France, and Italy for the students.  She will show them that in order to find the rest of the places, the students will need to use their atlas.  They are to look up a map of Europe (the teacher will give the page number).

Step Three:
The teacher will tell the students to finish their maps.  The students are to use a pen to write the names of the cities and countries.  The students are to then color the countries using the colored pencils.  The students are to use a jewish star to indicate a concentration camp.

Assessment:
The students will turn in the maps to be graded.
