Materials and Equipment:
Several books about the Holocaust to make copies of certain pages.Possible ideas are Fireflies in the Dark, Susan Rubin, Lost Childhood, by Janet Peck and Margaret Weis, The Holocaust, by Stuart Kallen, and The Holocaust, by Helen Strahinich
Each student will need notebook paper and a pencil
Procedures:
Step One:
The teacher will pass out the copies pages from the books that she has copied, one selection at a time.If the teacher has skipped around in the book, then handout one area at a time.
Step Two:
The teacher will read the passage, or students will take turns reading the selections out loud.After each selection, the class will discuss the information they have just read. This step will be repeated as many times as selections you have.
Step Three:
The teacher will have the students write at least three paragraphs telling about things they learned about children during the Holocaust.
Assessment:
The teacher will collect the papers that the students
have written.She will check for
accuracy of information, at least three paragraphs, and for correct grammar.She
will use the rubric for grading.
Accommodation:
For students with ADHD, the teacher might allow them to read aloud to the class at least for a paragraph or two.For children who have problems with reading, they might allow them to work with a partner.
