Technology Connection:
Technologies that will be used in this lesson include:

Procedures:
Step One: Introduction
Have a small group of students go to a computer.  Explain to students that you are going to use the computer to find out information about ABC's and 123's.  List 2 or more questions that introduce students to your TopicQuest that establish a connection to students' prior knowledge by asking them:
1. "Do you know the meaning of the ABC's and 123's?"
2. "Can you tell me what alphabets and numbers are used for?"
Today we are going to learn about letters and numbers by visiting websites on the Internet and we will do a fun activity.  I have made a special Web page for your class.  (During discussion have students turn around away from the computer to interact.)

Estimated Time for Step One:
5 minutes

Step Two Teaching the Primary Learning Outcomes:
(Have students sit at the computer where they can control the mouse and computer.)  (Explain to students the process of the lesson.)  After we visit several websites about letters and numbers then you will pretend to be a host at a party for Barney and his friends and then draw a picture representing letters and numbers.

Check for understanding
Have students explore and discuss the information in each of the 3 pre-selected websites.  Ask students guiding questions about the important concepts in each of the visited websites.   List three or more questions.
1.  Do you understand why we have letters?
2.
Why is it important for us to have numbers?
3.  How would you use the numbers and letters when you learn them?

Practice and feedback related to the PLO
Read mission project to students.  Explain to students that they are going to host a learning party for their class and find out information about the alphabets and numbers.  Tell the students that the information that they will need to complete their mission project is listed and connected in the  mission activity.  Visit website for information for mission project.  Discuss the information in the linked website in the mission activity with the students to emphasize interesting and important information students will need to complete mission project.

[Students will write (or dictate to teacher) information to be included in the drawing for the mission project.  While students are completing mission project, teacher will observe students and give assistance when needed.]

Mission
Let's pretend that you are the host at a party for Barney and all his friends. You need to know all of your ABC's and 123's to provide the entertainment for Barney and three of his friends. The Gang is very excited to see what you have in store for them. Someone told you that singing, dancing and playing learning games is their favorite entertainment. You are resposible for providing this entertainment. I hope you have lots of fun singing, dancing and learning all at the same time. Stay cool and calm on your mission to excitment!

Mission Steps

1. Click on the link to get all the material you need to help with your party. Learning Entrtainment
2. Once you have picked the best material for your party you will need to pick four friends and prepare a list of the alphabets and a list of numbers from 1-10 and don't forget to pick a song.
3. Now that you have all this you will need to draw a picture of your four friends and label each one of them with the letter that their names begin with. You will also need to count your four friends and give them a number.
4. Make sure you have four friends with a letter and a number on each one of them.
5. As soon as that is complete you and your friends can sing, dance and enjoy a song with Barney.

Estimated Time for Step Two:
35 minutes

Step Three
Closure:
Have students discuss their mission project and information they found on the Internet.  Tell students that your topicquest page is on the Internet and they can visit the website at school or home.  Explain to students that you are going to put their pictures and information on the Internet and they will be able to share their mission projects with their friends and family.  (If possible teacher should take brief notes during the lesson and concluding discussions to be added later to the assessment and reflections in lesson plan.)

Estimated Time for Step Three:
5 minutes

Accommodation:
Links for Accommodations for Special Students
1. Select one of your students that needs special attention.  Describe the student in your class with special needs. (Do not use the student's real name.  You could refer to the student as "the special student.")  The special needs student that I observed was ADHD and his mother did not have him on medicine. He had a very hard time staying on task.

2. Explain what you would add to this lesson plan to accommodate your special student? For this special needs student I would allow him to first go to the sites that had the games to show him the fun he would be able to have after the lesson. During the lesson I would keep the site up for him and tell him he had to pay attention to learn how to get to the games.

Comments & Reflections: For Electronic Portfolio Principle #1 Content and Curriculum: Teachers demonstrate a strong content knowledge of content area(s). Describe how your TopicQuest project is evidence that shows how you understand concepts of knowledge.  Also tell how you used the tools of inquiry to develop and implement your TopicQuest for your elementary students in your field classroom

1. Describe how you developed the mini-reserach TopicQuest lesson for your students.  Include your process of researching and selecting web sites for your pre-k/elementary students.
I went on the internet and found web sites for the age appropriate students I was going to teach. I just typed in that I was looking for sites to teach Pre-K students their ABC's and 123's. I looked over the web sites carefully before choosing them.

2. Comment on your teaching of how your TopicQuest lesson created learning experiences and activities that implemented the use a variety of resources and technologies.
The students were able to use the mouse and computer to gain knowledge of  how to look and different web sites with my assistant. They also did a hands on activity to help enhance their motor skills.

3. Describe what your students did (mission/evidence) as a result of your  TopicQuest learning activities that created interdisciplinary learning experiences that allow students to integrate knowledge and skills to apply them to everyday life situations.
The students were able to go to the different web sites as I talked about them. They had good control over the usage of the mouseand was able to figure out how each site worked. They followed the directions on how to do the hands on activity with little help.

4. Examine and describe your teaching of this TopicQuest lesson.
I was able to hold their attention while I taught the lesson because I used Barney as a helper. They did ask alot of questions about how we use both letters and numbers and I was able to answer all of their questions. I was also able to cover all the information in the given time.

5. Give at least one suggestion that would lead to improving your teaching practices and student achievement.
I think the next time I will give more examples and allow the students more time to write, explore and play the games.

A Pre- K student wrote a few of the letters and numbers at the top of her page. She then drew four of her friends from the learning party and labeled them with the first letter of their name.  She then numbered them 1- 4. She said that her and her friends were  playing in the moonlight. This is also a picture by a Pre-K student.  She said she had to write her ABC's and 123's first and then she was going to draw her pictures. She drew four friends and then labeled each one with an alphabet. She also added a number to them. She said she was drawing the water gun to show how they played in the water with Barney.
