My
name is Kellie Thomason. I grew up in Thomaston,
Georgia. I say the town was named after me, but
they spelled it wrong. I have two brothers
and a sister. Terri is 42, Jeff is 28, Bobby is 27, and I"m
21. I’m graduating in July and
starting my Masters in Special Education in August. I work
at the catering department on campus. I also
substitute on Fridays. In my spare time, I love playing with my
dog and reading.
I
decided to teach because I love learning. When I say I love
children, the following is what I love about them.
Innocence is one of the characteristics I
love most about children. For
example: “Are
they going to put my daddy to sleep?” eight-year old Destin asks.
“No, sweetheart”, I say gently as I pull the
car over to the side of the
road.
I
climb in the back seat next to Destin and draw him close. “Your
daddy is having surgery to remove a
cancerous kidney. They will not put him
to sleep like the veterinarian did Sally.”
Hugging Destin I think to myself, God bless the innocence of a
child.
I equally
adore how bluntly honest they can be.
For example, a woman was reviewing shapes with her three-year
old daughter,
Logan. “What shape is this?” she asked
as she held up a paper plate. “It has
no corners.” With a smile her mother
answered, “Right. It has no corners,
but what is it?” Logan replied, “It’s a
plate, Mama.”
Children’s
innocence and honesty form the primary foundation of why I choose
education as
my career.
Who Inspired Me:
My
high school writing teacher inspired me to become a teacher. Ever
since I can remember, I wanted to be a teacher. However, I always
thought people became teachers because of the promise of a job and paid
summer vacations. She taught me that I could avoid my stigmatism
by my attitude. She showed me that she wasn’t there because of
external benefits, but there because of the internal benefits.
Needless to say, I was impressed.
