Rationale


The purpose of this website is to acquaint students with the Jazz Legend, Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong.  His remarkable achievements are an accreditation to both to the Jazz Age and African-American culture.  I feel that it is imperative that his contributions to society not be lost.

Activity I
Age of Jazz

Primary Learning Outcomes
    A.
Students will list seven facts about Louis Armstrong between 1900- 1970.

Materials needed for this activity:
 
   1. Website: Satchmo.net:  The Louis Armstrong House & Archives

         2.  Paper
         3.  Pencil
         4.  Crayons, markers

Procedures
  • Student will access The Louis Armstrong House & Archives and read the paragraphs under, Who is Louis Armstrong?
  • When finished, student will select Time line and read through the time line of the great Jazz legend.
Product
  • On a piece of white unlined paper, student will create their own time line giving seven dates, one from each decade.
  • On the other side of the the paper, students will draw a likeness of Louis Armstrong and give the dates of his lifespan.



Activity II
What a Wonderful World

Primary Learning Outcomes
    A.
Students will learn the stories behind four songs by listening to Satchmo's wonderful works.

Materials needed for this activity:
 
   1. Website: Smithsonian Jazz

         2.  Paper
         3.  Pencil
         4.  Sound capabilities, headphones

Procedures
  • Student will access Smithsonian Jazz and will select Learn it on the right hand of page, and at the drop down menu, select Jazz Class
  • Once at Jazz Class, student will scroll down the page and find Louis Armstrong
  • Select Louis' Music Class and read the bio for each song and after reading, click on the link to listen to each song.
Product
  • On a piece of white paper, student will list all four songs and summarize story behind song of their choice.


Activity III
I Wanna Be Like You

Primary Learning Outcomes
    A.
Students will learn about how trumpets are made and then make one of their own out of paper.

Materials needed for this activity:
 
  1. Website:
Making a Natural Trumpet: an Illustrated Workshop Guide and Show and Tell with Mr. Rogers
        2.  Toilet paper tube or paper towel tube
      3.  Buttons
      4.  Tacky glue


Procedures
Product
  • On a piece of white unlined paper, student will draw a likeness of the trumpet found at Making a Natural Trumpet: an Illustrated Workshop Guide and put a description of the trumpet underneath their drawing, along with the name of the instrument.
  • Using the tube, students will make their own trumpet using the guidelines listed at Show and Tell with Mr. Rogers
