Procedures:
Step One: Introduction
Have a small group of students go to a computer.  Explain to students that you are going to use the computer to read an Mini-Research eBook about community helpers and thier jobs.  List 2 or more questions that introduce students to your Mini-Research eBook that will establish a connection to students' prior knowledge by asking them:
1. "What is a community helper?"
2. "Can you give me an example of a community helper?"
Today we are going to read an eBook on the Internet.  I have made a special Mini-Research eBook on the Internet for your class.  (During discussion have students turn around away from the computer to interact.)

Estimated Time for Step One:
5 minutes

Step Two Teaching the Primary Learning Outcomes:
(Students will sit at the computer where they can control the mouse and computer.)  (Explain to students the process of the lesson.)  We are going to read my Mini-Research eBook and visit several websites.

Check for understanding
Students with teacher assistance will read the Mini-Research eBook, explore, and discuss the information in the four linking websites that go with the Mini-Research eBook.  Ask students guiding questions about the important concepts in the Mini-Research eBook and the linking websites.   List four or more questions from each of your linking websites that will guide your students to gain information for your PLO.
1.  What is a firefigherts job?
2.
  What do farmers grow?
3.  How does a police officer keep us safe?
4.  How does a nurse take care of us?

Practice and feedback related to the PLO
Read the Mini-Research eBook project to students.  Explain to students that they are going to pretend they are a community helper and draw a picture of themselves as if they were that community helper and one item they need to do their job. Under their picture, they will tell me who they are and what their job is.  Tell the students that the information that they will need to complete their Mini-Research eBook project is listed and connected in the Mini-Research eBook activity.  Review the information in the linked website in the Mini-Research eBook activity with the students to emphasize interesting and important information students will need to complete mission project.

My Job As A Community Helper!
You get to be a community helper! Pretend that you are any of the community helpers we have learned today! We learned about the firefighter, police man, farmer, and nurse. Draw yourself as you would look if you were one of these helpers and one thing you would need to be able to do your job. Below your picture, tell me which community helper you chose and what your job is.
Lesson 2 Activity

1.
Pick a community helper you would like to be.
2. Using markers, draw yourself on a white piece of paper as the community helper you chose. Be sure to include one thing that helps you do your job.
3.
For help, you can go back to look at the firefighter, farmer, police man, and nurse community helpers.
4. Under your picture, write one sentence telling me which community helper you chose and tell me what your job is.

[Students will write (or dictate to teacher) information to be included in their Mini-Research eBook project.  While students are completing Mini-Research eBook project, teacher will observe students and give assistance when needed.]

Estimated Time for Step Two:

This student named all four of the community helpers that we discussed in this lesson. He also named a job that each community helper did. I asked the questions listed, and he responded with the correct answers for each. As he was drawing his picture, he named everything that the police needed to do his job effectively.

1. Comment on your teaching of how your Mini-Research eBook Lesson created learning experiences and activities that implemented the use a variety of resources and technologies.  (* To receive full credit description must include a minimum of two sentences and a detailed example.)

In my Mini-Research eBook Lesson I used several educational games and videos, and pictures of real community helpers to help enhance their learning. These resources worked  to my advantage and in turn  helped the students understand what community helpers were. This lesson grabbed the students' interests and attention. After the lesson, one of the students told me that he wanted to do some of the games again because it was fun.

2. State evidence to show that your students gained knowledge during your Mini-Research eBook Lesson.  (* To receive full credit description must include a minimum of two sentences and a detailed example.)

The lesson that I taught the students was not taught yet, but had been talked about in class. This activity helped them further their prior knowledge into new knowledge. This was evident because the students' finished assessment was complete and correct. One of my students described the jobs of the community helper she picked effortlessly. She was able to provide examples of where the community helper would work and  how they help people in their community.

3. Give at least one suggestion that would lead to improving your teaching practices and student achievement.  (* To receive full credit description must include a minimum of two sentences and a detailed example.)

My lesson would be better if I would have used more games and activities to go with each. The students really enjoyed the games of each community helper and I think it helped them better understand what their jobs were better. I think that the students comprehended the materials, but more examples would make the lesson more successful.
