Procedures:
Step One: Introduction
Have a small group of students go to a computer.  Explain to students that you are going to use the computer to find out information about baby animals.  List 2 or more questions that introduce students to topic of bugs that establish a connection to students' prior knowledge by asking them: "What kind of bugs were in the Eric Carle books you have been reading in class?"  "Can you tell me something that you know about bugs?"   Today we are going to learn about bugs by visiting websites on the Internet and we will do a fun activity to learn more about bugs.  I have made a special bug page for your class.  (During discussion have students turn around away from the computer to interact.)

Estimated Time for Step One:
5 minutes

Step Two Teaching the Primary Learning Outcomes:
(Have students sit at the computer where they can control the mouse and computer.)  (Explain to students the process of the lesson.)  After we visit several websites about bugs you will write and illustrate your own magazine article, just like Eric Carle.

Check for understanding
Have students explore and discuss the information in each of the 3 or 4 pre-selected websites.  Ask students guiding questions about the important concepts in each of the visited websites.  (Save "Ladybug" website to use in Mission Project.)  List three or more questions.
1. Can you point out the ladybug's Antennas?
2. Do all ladybugs look alike?
3
. In the life cycle of a bug what do they start off as?

Practice and feedback related to the PLO
Read mission project to students.  Explain to students that they are going to be magazine author and illustrator.  Discuss that magazine writers tell stories that are entertaining or informative.  Tell the students that the information that they will need to complete their mission project is listed and connected in the  mission activity.  Visit website for information for mission project, "Get Busy with Bugs, "Eric Carle" Style."  Discuss the information in the linked website in the mission activity with the students to emphasize interesting and important information students will need to complete mission project.

[Students will write (or dictate to teacher) information about the baby animal game and draw pictures for the mission project.  While students are completing mission project, teacher will observe students and give assistance when needed.]

Mission

Congratulations!
You have just received your first job as an Author and Illustrator for the magazine "What's Bugging You?"  It is a magazine that is all about bugs!  They want you to write and illustrate the Spring addition!  Your mission is to write a story about your favorite bug. It can be a happy, sad, funny or scary...it is completely up to you!  This is your chance to get busy writing and illustrating just like Eric Carle!  Well now that you have heard the Buzzzz, let's get started!

Mission Steps...

1. Visit the Bug websites on the Internet
for ideas to begin.

2. Decide what type of Bug you are going
to write about.

3.  Begin writing your cool bug story.

4. After writing your story,
start on the illustrations.

5. Make sure you stay on topic and
that your pictures mactch your words.

6.  Take a seat in the Author's chair
and share your book with the rest of the class.

Estimated Time for Step Two:
35 minutes

Step Three
Closure:
Have students discuss their mission project of writing and illustrating their own magazine article and information they found on the Internet about bugs and Eric Carle.  Tell students that your topicquest page is on the Internet and they can visit the website at school or home to learn more about y animals.  Explain to students that you are going to put their drawings on the Internet and they will be able to share their mission projects with their friends and family.  (If possible teacher should take brief notes during the lesson and concluding discussions to be added later to the assessment and reflections in lesson plan.)

Estimated Time for Step Three:
5 minutes

Assessment:
A. Technology Integration K-10
Student will be assessed through observation while using the computer with teacher guidance to do research and find information for the mission project.
Satisfactory: Student is able to use the computer with teacher guidance to do research and find information for the mission project.
Unsatisfactory: Student is not able to use the computer with teacher guidance to do research and find information for the mission project.

Accommodation:

Links for Accommodations for Special Students

1.
The student that needs special attention has a specific learning disability. He can do well when someone is helping him one-on-one but needs extra time to complete assignments.

2. The URL address is:   http://www.glc.k12.ga.us/passwd/trc/ttools/attach/accomm/spedis.doc

3. To accommodate the special student, I would ask simpler questions and give the student as much time as he needed to answer the questions. I would also explain (in detail) the meanings of words that he may not know.

Reflections...
1. a. Describe and give examples of how your TopicQuest lesson created learning experiences and activities that makes subject matter meaningful for students.     b. Describe and give examples of how your TopicQuest lesson illustrated your understanding of content and tools of inquiry.  c. Describe and give examples of how students were engaged in learning and responded during your lesson.

My topicquest was a wonderful teaching tool in my lesson.  Being able to use the computer sparked my children's interest right off.  I believe they were focused because this was a new experience for them. Exploring the different websites to gather information about bugs helped them in their mission of writing a story about bugs.

Researching the websties was extremely helpful for my own knowledge of bugs.  After researching numerous I became aware of many things I did not know.  For example I did not know that butterflies do not form from a cacoon.

2. Describe and give examples of how the students achieved the assessment of your lesson. Give the achievement level (satisfactory or unsatisfactory) for each assessment for each of your students.

Researching the websties was extremely helpful for my own knowledge of bugs.  After researching numerous I became aware of many things I did not know.  For example I did not know that butterflies do not form from a cacoon.

    A. Technology Integration:
        Student One: Satisfactory
        Student Two:  Satisfactory

*Both students had no problem using the mouse.  They were very eager to explore the different bug websites!

    B. Fine Arts:
        Student One: Satisfactory
        Student Two:  Satisfactory

3. Describe what you would do differently and why if you taught this lesson again.

To improve this lesson I would use it with older children.  I would also let it be longer lesson.  I felt very rushed.
