Mini-Research eBook Lesson Plan 2
Teaching Strategy Activity
Title of Mini-Research eBook Lesson: Math is Fun!
Primary Learning Outcome (PLO):
The primary learning outcomes to be achieved with this lesson include:
PLO: Students
will be able to recognize place value for two-digit numbers,
and be able to add
and subtract two-digit numbers.
Materials and Equipment:
1. Have an example of Mini-Research eBook activity to show students
2. Paper for drawing
3. Crayons and/or color markers
4. Pencil & paper (to make notes for lesson plan assessment and
reflections)
5. Modification of a lesson developed by Dr. Diane L. Judd
Technology Connection:
Technologies that will be used in this lesson include:
Procedures:
Step One:
Introduction
Have a small group of students go to a computer. Explain to
students that you are going to use the computer to read an
Mini-Research eBook
about adding
and subtractinng
one and two-digit numbers.
List 2 or more
questions that introduce students
to your Mini-Research eBook that will establish a
connection to students' prior knowledge by asking them:
1. Can
you tell me how we add two-digits
numbers?
2. Does place
value effect how we add when adding two-digit numbers?
Today we are going
to read an eBook
on the Internet. I have made a special Mini-Research eBook on the
Internet for your
class. (During discussion have students turn around away from the
computer to interact.)
Estimated Time for Step One:
5 minutes
Step Two
Teaching the Primary Learning Outcomes:
(Students will sit at the computer where they can control the mouse
and computer.) (Explain to students the process of the
lesson.) After we read the Mini-Research eBook and visit
several websites.
Check for understanding
Students with teacher assistance will read the Mini-Research eBook,
explore, and
discuss
the information in the four linking websites that go with the
Mini-Research eBook. Ask
students guiding
questions about the important concepts in the Mini-Research eBook and
the linking
websites. List four or more questions from each of your
linking websites that will guide your students to gain information for
your PLO.
1.Do you remember how to do simple addition math problems?
2.Can you subtract one-digit numbers?
3.Can you show me how to add two-digit numbers? Can you use proper
notation and set the problem up in the right place value setting?
4. Can you solve two-digit subtraction problems? Do you know the proper
notation to use? Can you set place value up correctly in the problem?
Practice and feedback related to the
PLO
Read the Mini-Research eBook project to students. Explain to
students that
they
are going to to be helping me
out today. We are
going to the toy factory and we are going to add toys together with an
addition problem using a graphic organizer, write out a word problem
and draw a simple model of the addition problem you made.
Tell
the
students that the information that they will need to complete
their Mini-Research eBook project is listed and connected in
the Mini-Research eBook
activity. Review the
information in the linked website in
the Mini-Research eBook activity with the students to emphasize
interesting and important information students will need to complete
mission
project.
| The Toy Factory! |
| Real-World Activity: You have recently learned how to add and subtract two digit numbers without regrouping. Today I am going to give you the opportunity to show me how well you can add and subtract two digit numbers. We are going to the toy factory and I need your help. I have a list of toys that I need to obtain from the toy factory. You are going to help me get the toys I need. There are two seperate bags. One bag contains the items I have to get from the toy factory. The second bag has the number of each item I need. If you need help Skipper Math will show you both adding and subtracting two-digit numbers. Good Luck! |
| Lesson 2
Directions: This time the students will be doing subtraction of two-digit numbers. You will only draw one numbers because I have too many toys and I need to give some away. I have 39 of each kind of toy. I want you to subtract the number you draw from the total amount of toys I have and give me the difference. 1.You will draw one item out of the first bag. 2.You will then draw from the second bag, but only draw one, two-digit number this time. 3.First you will write out a word story. 5.Then the students will draw a subtraction probem using the number given to them and the number they drew from the bad. Once they are done writing the problem they will illustrate it with a model of their word story. |
Step Three
Closure:
Have students discuss their Mini-Research eBook activity and
information they found on the Internet.
Tell students that your Mini-Research eBook Website is on the Internet
and
they can
visit the website at school or home. Explain to students
that you are going to put their pictures and information
on the Internet and they will be able to share their mission
projects with
their friends and family. (If possible teacher should take
brief
notes during the lesson and concluding discussions to be added
later
to the assessment and reflections in lesson plan.)
Estimated Time for Step Three:

Comments & Reflections:
Assessment for the
Primary Learning Outcomes (PLOs)
Student will be assessed through
observation and oral discussion to
evaluate if student with teacher guidance is able to Students
were able to add numbers together and create a word problem. Also
students were able to draw a model of their word problem using
microsoft paint.
| Level 3 | Level 2 | Level 1 | |
| PLO: Students will be able to recognize place value for two-digit numbers, and be able to addand subtract two-digit numbers. | Student
with teacher
guidance is able to recognize place value when adding
and subtracting two-digit numbers as well as one digit numbers for
review. They are able to create an addition problem using a graphic
organizer, write a word problem, and draw a model of their addition
problem. |
Student with teacher guidance is able to recognize place value when adding and subtracting two-digit numbers as well as one digit numbers for review for the most part. They are able to create an addition problem using a graphic organizer, write a word problem, and draw a model of their addition problem, with a few minor issues. | Student with teacher guidance is not able to recognize place value when adding and subtracting two-digit numbers as well as one digit numbers for review. They are not able to create an addition problem using a graphic organizer, write a word problem, and draw a model of their addition problem. |

2 |
The student with teacher guidance was able to recognize place value when subtracting two-digit numbers as well as one digit numbers for most of the review. They are able to create a subtraction problem using a graphic organizer. However, when the student was writing their word problem they had some difficulty. Also the student did have a few minor issues when drawing out models for the word problem they created. I feel the student did grasp the concept and knew what was expect. I simply feel that the student was confused, and did need assistance in a few areas. Overall the student like the other three did a great job. |

2 |
The student with some teacher guidance was able to recognize place value when subtracting two-digit numbers, as well as one digit numbers during the review. The student was able to create a subtraction problem using a graphic organizer, write a word problem, and draw a model of their problem, with a few minor issues. This student did not seem to have any issues with wirting out the word problem. However, the student did need help when it came to setting up the problem, but was able to do the graphic organizer and model with little guidance then. |
1.
Comment and describe the
learning strategy
that you implemented in your
Mini-Research eBook Teaching Strategy Lesson. (*
To receive full credit description must include a minimum of two
sentences and a detailed example.)
* The day I taught this eBook lesson
the computers did work up until the students were ready to look at the
real world activity. However, since the students were able to look at
the other pages of the eBook, which served as a review of adding and
subtracting one and two-digit numbers. They were able to visit the
websties I had posted on each page, and really enjoyed it. Example:
Student 1, was able to improved their subtracting skills by using the
website on page two of the eBook Sinec the real world activity did not
work on the computer. I had the students do a similar activity to the
ones the students from the first eBook did.
2. State evidence to show that
your students gained knowledge during your Mini-Research eBook Teaching
Strategy Lesson. (*
To receive full credit description must include a minimum of two
sentences and a detailed example.)
*I feel the student's in this lesson
did grasp the concept of what I was trying to review with them.
However, I noticed that the student understood addition of two-digit
numbers better then subtraction. Place value is what really threw them
off when it come to subtracting with two-digit numbers.
3. Give at least one suggestion that would lead to improving your teaching practices and student achievement. (* To receive full credit description must include a minimum of two sentences and a detailed example.)
* One area I really know needs
improvement is sometimes I found myself wanting to tell the students
how to do everything. For example: As I watched both of the students
writing their word stories I wanted to correct them. However, I would
catch myself prior to doing so, I wanted the students to do this
activity on their own. Also I need to work on being clear about my
directions. The students did not seem to undertstand what I wanted to
being with especially when doing the activity.
