2. Paper for drawing
3. Crayons and/or color markers
4. Pencil & paper (to make notes for lesson plan assessment and reflections)
5. Modification of a  lesson developed by Dr. Diane L. Judd

Technology Connection:
Technologies that will be used in this lesson include:

Procedures:
Step One: Introduction
Have a small group of students go to a computer.  Explain to students that you are going to use the computer to read an Mini-Research eBook about adding and subtractinng one and two-digit numbers.  List 2 or more questions that introduce students to your Mini-Research eBook that will establish a connection to students' prior knowledge by asking them:
1. Can you tell me how we add two-digits numbers?
2. Does place value effect how we add when adding two-digit numbers?
Today we are going to read an eBook on the Internet.  I have made a special Mini-Research eBook on the Internet for your class.  (During discussion have students turn around away from the computer to interact.)

Estimated Time for Step One:
5 minutes

Step Two Teaching the Primary Learning Outcomes:
(Students will sit at the computer where they can control the mouse and computer.)  (Explain to students the process of the lesson.)  We are going to read my Mini-Research eBook and visit several websites.

Check for understanding
Students with teacher assistance will read the Mini-Research eBook, explore, and discuss the information in the four linking websites that go with the Mini-Research eBook.  Ask students guiding questions about the important concepts in the Mini-Research eBook and the linking websites.   List four or more questions from each of your linking websites that will guide your students to gain information for your PLO.
1.Do you remember how to do simple addition math problems?
2.Can you subtract one-digit numbers?
3.Can you show me how to add two-digit numbers? Can you use proper notation and set the problem up in the right place value setting?
4. Can you solve two-digit subtraction problems? Do you know the proper notation to use? Can you set place value up correctly in the problem?

Practice and feedback related to the PLO
Read the Mini-Research eBook project to students.  Explain to students that they are going to to be helping me out today. We are going to the toy factory and we are going to add toys together with an addition problem using a graphic organizer, write out a word problem and draw a simple model of the addition problem you made. Tell the students that the information that they will need to complete their Mini-Research eBook project is listed and connected in the Mini-Research eBook activity.  Review the information in the linked website in the Mini-Research eBook activity with the students to emphasize interesting and important information students will need to complete mission project.

Mini-Research eBook Real World Activity

The Toy Factory!
Real-World Activity: You have recently learned how to add and subtract two digit numbers without regrouping. Today I am going to  give you the opportunity to show me how well you can add and subtract two digit numbers. We are going to the toy factory and I need your help. I have a list of toys that I need to obtain from the toy factory. You are going to help me get the toys I need. There are two seperate bags. One bag contains the items I have to get from the toy factory. The second bag has the number of each item I need. If you need help Skipper Math will show you both adding and subtracting two-digit numbers. Good Luck!
Lesson 1 Directions:
This activity will be an individual effort.
1. You will draw one item out of the first bag. This will tell you which toy I would like for you to help me obtain.
2. Then you will draw two, two-digit numbers from a second bag.
3. Then  you take the number two numbers and the toy choosen from the bags, and create a word story that explains how you are going to obtain the item you selcted.
5. After you finish writing out your word story I want you to set up a problem that shows me how you added the two numbers together.
6. Once you have set up your problem, I want you to draw either a graphic organizer or a model to show how you added the numbers and obtained your answer.

[Students will write (or dictate to teacher) information to be included in their Mini-Research eBook project.  While students are completing Mini-Research eBook project, teacher will observe students and give assistance when needed.]

Estimated Time for Step Two:
35 minutes

Step Three
Closure:
Have students discuss their Mini-Research eBook activity and information they found on the Internet.  Tell students that your Mini-Research eBook Website is on the Internet and they can visit the website at school or home.  Explain to students that you are going to put their pictures and information on the Internet and they will be able to share their mission projects with their friends and family.  (If possible teacher should take brief notes during the lesson and concluding discussions to be added later to the assessment and reflections in lesson plan.)

Estimated Time for Step Three:
5 minutes

 Comments & Reflections:

Assessment for the Primary Learning Outcomes (PLOs)
Student will be assessed through observation, oral discussion, and developed product to evaluate if student: Students were able to add numbers together using a graphic organizer, and create a word problem. Also students were able to draw a model of their additon problem.

Rubric for Evaluation of PLO

Level 3 Level 2 Level 1
PLO: Students will be able to recognize place value for two-digit numbers, and be able to addand subtract two-digit numbers. Student with teacher guidance is able to recognize place value when  adding and subtracting two-digit numbers as well as one digit numbers for review. They are able to create an addition problem using a graphic organizer, write a word problem, and draw a model of their addition problem. Student with teacher guidance is able to recognize place value when  adding and subtracting two-digit numbers as well as one digit numbers for review for the most part. They are able to create an addition problem using a graphic organizer, write a word problem, and draw a model of their addition problem, with a few minor issues. Student with teacher guidance is not able to recognize place value when  adding and subtracting two-digit numbers as well as one digit numbers for review. They are not able to create an addition problem using a graphic organizer, write a word problem, and draw a model of their addition problem.

The student with little teacher guidance was able to recognize place value when adding the numbers for the word probem. The students was able to write a word problem with little to no help from the teacher, and create a graphic organizer and/or model to go along with the word problem. The student seemed to enjoy the activity, and understood what was expected of them.

The student was able to create a word problem with little help from the teacher. The student was a able to recognize place value when adding the numbers in their word problem. with litle help from the teacher. The students was also able to create a graphic oragnizer and/or model to go along with their word problem. The student seemed to understand what was expected, and was able to complete all tasks with little to no help from the teacher.

1. Comment on your teaching of how your Mini-Research eBook Lesson created learning experiences and activities that implemented the use a variety of resources and technologies.  (* To receive full credit description must include a minimum of two sentences and a detailed example.)

* The day I taugth this eBook lesson the internet was down at my practicum school. However, the students did get to look at my eBook, and were very excited to learn that I made the eBook just for them. Since the inernet was not working, I had to use the models I made for my pictures in the eBook to teach my lesson. The lesson went very well, though I was unhappy that the students did not get to see the eBook while I was teaching. I did feel that this lesson did bring something new to my practicum classroom. My mentor teacher does not really use the computer at all to teach lessons. So this was a new things for the students, and they reacted well to it.

2. State evidence to show that your students gained knowledge during your Mini-Research eBook Lesson.  (* To receive full credit description must include a minimum of two sentences and a detailed example.)

* The students were able to use my eBook as a review of adding and subtracting one and two-digit numbers. This was very helpful for them, especially since both will be on there CRCT. The students were able to show me that they had learned how to identify place value, how to write a word problem, and how to make a graphic organizer to go with the word problems. An example of this would be when I presented the real world acitvity to the two students. Each student was able to understand the task given to them, and able to create a word problem, graphic organizer, and use place value correctly while doing both.

3. Give at least one suggestion that would lead to improving your teaching practices and student achievement.  (* To receive full credit description must include a minimum of two sentences and a detailed example.)

*  One area I really know needs improvement is sometimes I found myself wanting to tell the students how to do everything. For example: As I watched both of the students writing their word stories I wanted to correct them. However, I would catch myself prior to doing so, I wanted the students to do this activity on their own.
