Valdosta State University

Hello, I'm Katie Callahan and I am a freshman at VSU.  I grew up and spent my whole life living in Atlanta, Georgia.  I went to St. Pius X Catholic High School, and I loved it there!  My senior year was a blast and a part of me never wanted to leave.  Leaving home and coming to Valdosta was a little hard for me.  Saying bye to my friends and family was hard and I wanted to bring them to Valdosta with me.  It was a huge change for me to come to Valdosta after living in Atlanta for so long.  I have adjusted to Valdosta and it has become my second home.  My first semester at Valdosta went smoothly and my grades were what I wanted! Right now, my major is undecided but I am interested in Early Childhood Education.  Hopefully, with the help of FYE, I will find a major that is perfect for me!

The Freshman Year Experience Program

Your freshman year experience at Valdosta State University is critical in laying the groundwork for a successful academic and professional career. Employers view a well rounded successful academic career as evidence that students can be equally successful and productive in their chosen fields. Success begins by mastering the three principal tasks of the first year student:

  • Academic Skills Development
  • Adjusting to College Life
  • Developing Academic & Career Goals

I am very glad I chose to get involved in FYE.  I feel like all 26 students in my FYE class have become a close group of friends and it is nice walking into class and recognizing almost everyone.  I also think that the FYE program is very beneficial when it comes to signing up for classes and getting advised.  When it came time to sign up for classes, my advisor already assigned me 3 of my core classes which was a big help and relief!  I know that next year I will keep in touch with many of the people in my FYE class!
