Technologies that will be used in this lesson include:

Procedures:
Step One: Introduction
Have a small group of students go to a computer.  List 2 or more questions that introduce students to topic of South Georgia wildlife that establish a connection to students' prior knowledge by asking them: "Have you ever studied or read a book about South Georgia wildlife?"  "Can you tell me something that you know about the animals that live in Georgia?"   Today we are going to learn about animals in South Georgia by visiting web sites on the Internet and we will do a fun activity to learn more about armadillo's which live in South Georgia. (Give explanation of importance of lesson to students' lives today or in the future.)  I have made a special wildlife page for your class.  (During discussion have students turn around away from the computer to interact.)

Estimated Time for Step One:
5 minutes

Step Two Teaching the Primary Learning Outcomes:
(Have students sit at the computer where they can control the mouse and computer.)  (Explain to students the process of the lesson.)  After we visit several web sites about the animals in Georgia then you will pretend to be a zoo worker for Wild Adventures and make a list of foods armadillos like to eat.

Check for understanding
Have students explore and discuss the information in each of 3 or 4 pre-selected web sites.  Ask students guiding questions about the important concepts in each of the visited web sites.  (Save "Armadillos" web site to use in Mission Project.)  List three or more questions.
1.  What is the armadillo's favorite food?
2.  What are some other foods the armadillo likes to eat?
3
.  When does the armadillo come out to eat?

Practice and feedback related to the PLO
Read mission project to students.  Explain to student that they are going to be dietitian for Wild Adventures.  Discuss dietitian with students and explain what it is they do. Tell the students that the information that they will need to complete their mission project is listed and connected in the  mission activity.  Visit web site for information for mission project, "Armadillo's."  Discuss the information in the linked web site in the mission activity with the students to emphasize interesting and important information students will need to complete mission project.

(Students will write (or dictate to teacher) information to be included in the list of foods for the mission project.  While students are completing mission project, teacher will observe students and give assistance when needed.)

Mission Project

Pretend you work at Wild Adventures in the zoo department.  Your main job is taking care of and feeding the animals that are native to South Georgia.  You are told to help create a diet plan for an armadillo that will be arriving in a few weeks.  His name is Diller and he will be very hungry when he arrives.  After reading about the armadillo  make a list of all the foods he likes to eat.

Mission Steps

1.  Pretend you work for Wild Adventures and you have make a list of all the foods Diller will like.
2.  Click on the web page for armadillos and read all about what type of food they like.
3.  Make a list of all the foods Diller likes to eat.

Estimated Time for Step Two:
35 minutes

Step Three
Closure:
Have students discuss their mission project of their food list and information they found on the Internet about armadillos and South Georgia wildlife.  Tell students that your topicquest page is on the Internet and they can visit the web site at school or home to learn more about armadillos and South Georgia wildlife.  Explain to students that you are going to put their food list on the Internet and they will be able to share their mission projects with their friends and family.  (If possible teacher should take brief notes during the lesson and concluding discussions to be added later to the assessment and reflections in lesson plan.)

Estimated Time for Step Three:
5 minutes

Assessment:
A. Technology Integration K-10
Student will be assessed through the use of the computer with teacher guidance to do research and find information for the mission project.
Satisfactory: Student is able to use the computer with teacher guidance to do research and find information for the mission project.
Unsatisfactory: Student is not able to use the computer with teacher guidance to do research and find information for the mission project.

Accommodation:

Teacher Resource Center for Significant Development Delay
1. The special student in my class has not been formally tested for SDD, but shows signs of delays in cognitive abilities. The student seems to have trouble understanding instructions, finishing seat work on time, fine motor skills, and verbal communication.

2. Georgia Learning Connections (GLC)
    URL:  http://www.glc.k12.ga.us/trc/search.asp?mode=result&intpathid=209&strKeyword=Development+Delay

3.  To accommodate my special student I would allow him to have extra time to work on the assignment with routine help from the teacher.

Reflections: (For Electronic Portfolio under Standard #1 Knowledge of Subject Matter)
1. a. Describe and give examples of how your TopicQuest lesson created learning experiences and activities that makes subject matter meaningful for students.  I geared my topic quest to wildlife in South Georgia.  My main purpose was to open the students to all the different types of wildlife around their homes.

    b. Describe and give examples of how your TopicQuest lesson illustrated your understanding of content and tools of inquiry.
Both of my students we able to understand the concept of  research.  Both students we able to navigate through my website to find the information that was needed.

    c. Describe and give examples of how students were engaged in learning and responded during your lesson.
Both of my students were very interested in the lesson.  I used one computer and allowed each student to have a turn. Each of them were very excited each time a new link was clicked.

  2. Describe and give examples of how the students achieved the assessment of your lesson. Give the achievement level (satisfactory or unsatisfactory) for each assessment for each of your students.
    A. Technology Integration:
Student One:   Was able to achieve the level for the lesson.  She gathered all the information she needed to make a list of foods for Diller.
Student Two:   This student was also able to to gather the needed information for the food list needed for Diller.

3. Describe what you would do differently and why if you taught this lesson again.  I would have taught the lesson in a different setting / area.

This is the list Becky made for Diller.  She made sure she listed at least three foods that Diller will eat.  She said she was excited for his arrival and hope he enjoys his dinner.

(Three or more sentences of students' descriptions & comments)

This is Blake's list for Diller.  Much like Becky he made sure Diller would have plenty to eat.  He thought he would love to have some tasty bugs when he arrived at Wild Adventures.
