Requirements

Personal Assessment: Write a 3 - 4 page paper of a personal assessment of your ethnic and cultural heritage that will require attention to several general themes. Discuss your own cultural background by looking at behavior, expectations, and values you have regarding the following social systems variables: family values and behaviors both now and as you were growing up; nationality; ethnicity; religion; language; geographic region; gender; socioeconomic status; educational status; and political orientation. Share what insights you have gain as a result of this assignment.

Level I and II Activities: The activities described will give you the opportunities to learn about diverse populations. The levels of the activities represent differing degrees of cognitive and experiential risk and involvement. For each level, you are asked to participate by completing the activity then write a 3 - 4 page brief description of what you did, what happened, what you observed, and what you learned (from the activity as well as about yourself). A sample list of activities for each level will be provided.

Research Paper: You will learn about a specific population and communicate to the class what you learned about your topic and what you learned about yourself in the process of completing the assignment. Papers must include a component that addresses school counseling, clinical counseling or school psychology issues for this population and issues the counselor or psychologist may face in working with the population you have chosen to examine. The 8 - 10 page paper will address cultural heritage of the group, beliefs and values, demographics, issues common to this population, counseling theory, research and applications to this population, and how the group was impacted as a result of completing this project. An outline will be provided in class. A copy of a PowerPoint presentation must be emailed to each class member.

Cultural Diversity Plan: Each student will develop a year long cultural diversity plan with strategies for incorporating this plan into their work environment. School counseling students will include monthly (10) themes with a description of the activities, goals, objectives, methods, and evaluation for each theme. Five of the listed activities must be described in detail (see format attached). Clinical counseling & School psychology students will develop a project that is relevant to the area that they plan to work in. Potential projects include: developing a workshop or group (for a specific population) format that addresses cultural issues, developing a community/school project that can be implemented to address cultural problems, developing strategies to address cross-cultural counseling problems, etc. A copy of the project must be emailed to each class member by the due date.

Participation: Participation is essential to this course. Since all of the learning in this course will occur in the context of online group discussion and activities, it is important that you respond to discussion questions on time in order to receive credit for participation. The factors used to assess your grade include participation in all discussions and staying current with assigned readings.

Multicultural Internet Sites: Students are to research the World Wide Web and identify 8 - 10 websites that can be used in multicultural counseling. You are to list and critique each site discussing the positive and negative qualities of each. Explain how you might use these sites in your proposed work setting and what benefits, if any do they offer to you as a counselor. You may use only one professional organization website, all others must be related to the practice of counseling/psychology.

Examination: One examination, comprising 100 multiple choice questions, will be given at the end of the semester.

ALL PAPERS ARE TO BE WRITTEN IN AMERICAN PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION (APA) STYLE. Please see the APA Manual 5th edition.
