Getting Started
Each student must get an FTP password to access the VSU server in order to post documents on individual student web pages
Go to the VSU Helpdesk in the library ASAP to get the FTP access password. Also, if you do not have a VSU email account – get one!
In class, we will activate the passwords and establish individual web pages.
If you use a PC at home, you may want to download recommended software from IT.
Anti-virus, Adware and Spyware, Web browsers, FTP SSH, and plug-ins. Get the latest versions listed for WebCT Vista and the Microsoft Office plug-ins as necessary.
You will need to copy Homepage Shell from Mr. Wood’s homepage.
Link to Homepage Shell, Click Office Button and Save as a webpage to your computer. Make sure to remember where you save it.
From Start Button, open FrontPage. Then open your saved copy of Homepage Shell
Enter your name where it says Your Name. Now Save as index.htm. This will be your homepage.
To transfer index.htm to the VSU server, you must open SSH Secure File Transfer from your desktop.
Once
open, Click Quick Connect and enter Host
name (ftp.valdosta.edu) and user name (your VSU email name) and Connect. Next enter your FTP password
and click OK.
Once connected you will have two panes on the display. The left pane is your computer and the right pane is what is on the VSU server.
On the right pane, double click public_html. If you see index.htmI or index.htm then delete it.
Next, from the left side, click and drag index.htm to the right side. Your homepage is now on the VSU server
Go to the VSU homepage, hit refresh, and then in the address window enter http://www.valdosta.edu/~your email name. We can snazz up the page later on.
Later, we will learn how to hyperlink from your homepage to your assignments page.
