 Welcome to Jessica's World

Valdosta State University

Hi, my name is Jessica Yarbrough. I am from Waycross, Georgia, which is only an hour east of Valdosta. I am currently a freshman at Valdosta State University. I decided to attend Valdosta State University for many reasons. One reason is because the campus is beautiful. Another reason is because it is far enough from my hometown for me to be on my own, but also close enough for me to visit often. Another reason is because I know a lot of people in Valdosta, and I feel comfortable being in Valdosta. I am currently undecided when it comes to my major. More than likely, however, I am going to major in Communication Disorders and minor in Business. I want to become a Speech Pathologist, so Communication Disorders is the best major to pursue. As of now, I am just trying to get my core courses out of the way before I worry with major courses.

The Freshman Year Experience Program

Your freshman year experience at Valdosta State University is critical in laying the groundwork for a successful academic and professional career. Employers view a well rounded successful academic career as evidence that students can be equally successful and productive in their chosen fields. Success begins by mastering the three principal tasks of the first year student:

  • Academic Skills Development

  • Adjusting to College Life

  • Developing Academic & Career Goals

VSU’s Freshman Year Experience (FYE) is an outstanding student development program that assists first-year students in accomplishing these tasks.  The program is designed primarily for students who have not yet decided on an academic major.

I have enjoyed being in the Freshman Year Experience program. I have met a great group of people with whom I have become very close. Not only have I met great people, it was also nice to have three of my classes set in stone each semester. That made it much easier to register for classes. I had the same English professor both semesters, which was also nice. Overall, my Freshman Year Experience was great and I would not change anything.
