Underwater Habitats:
Sea Anemone
Science: 3rd Grade
Do you know what a sea anemone is?
On this website, we will discover
the habitats of sea anemone, a mysterious underwater living
organism.
This is something that is fun and exciting to learn!
Georgia
Performance Standard:
Students will
investigate the habitats of
different organisms and dependence of organisms on their habitat.
Activities
Activity One
1. What is an anemone and
it's anatomy?
In this
activity, we will discover what a sea anemone is and why they are
important to their environment.
2. PLO
Student
will be able to look at a diagram of a sea anemone and name the parts
of it and their significance.
3. Materials
Website: Anatomy
of an Anemone
computer
with Internet
investigation tablet
chart paper
anatomy of
an anemone chart
4. Procedures
- Have decorated chart paper present in front of the class.
- Ask students questions to fill out the chart in three columns:
know, want to know, learned. Apply it to what students know about
anemone.
- At a computer, click on the website "Anatomy of an Anemone."
- Read about the anemone.
- Take notes of interesting information on your investigation
tablet.
- Fill out the "learned" column.
- Fill out the Anatomy of an Anemone together as a class
5. Product
Students
will be able to use the information that they learned to complete a
chart on the anatomy of an anemone later in class.
Activity Two
1. What is anemone's habitat
and why is it important for them to thrive in?
In this
activity, we will learn where an anemone lives and why it is important
that the live in that particular environment.
2. PLO
Student
will be able to draw an example of the environment that an anemone
lives in.
3. Materials
website: Information
about Anemone
markers
paper
crayons
koosh
balls (to simulate anemone)
slips of
paper with title of different habitats
4. Procedures
- Have students look at the website
- Read/discover/learn what the habitat of an anemone looks like.
- Present them with a slip of paper of an environment. (Ex:
swamp, desert, plain, ocean, river)
- Have the students nicely draw the environment that is on their
slip.
- When all drawings are done, hang them up on the board.
- Hand the students the "anemone" and have them show the
environments that the anemone could live in.
5. Product
Students
can put the environments that they made into a graph of "Yes" or "No"
about whether or not an environment is appropriate for an anemone.
Activity Three
1. Why do clown fish depend
on anemone to live?
We will
learn why clown fish depend on anemone for survival.
2. PLO
Student
will be able to look at a clown fish and describe how it is related to
an anemone.
Student
will be able to write a description of the relationship between
clown fish and anemone.
3. Materials
website: Sea
Anemone and Clown Fish
computer
with Internet
bulletin
board
web chart
yarn
markers
crayons
paper
4. Procedures
- Have students look at website
- Write in their investigation tablet what relationship that they
think an anemone has with a clown fish
- Read further on the site
- Have students draw a clown fish
- Have a large anemone already made on the bulletin board
- Have students write a paragraph to go with their clown fish as to
why they think that the fish rely an anemone.
- Conduct a class activity in which the students make a web chart
and tell how a clown fish relies on anemone, attaching the student made
papers to the board.
5. Product
Students
will further their writing and describing skills along with learning
more about anemone.

This is just about as close
as you can get to the ocean floor without actually diving underwater.
The students should be able to search the ocean floor and describe
places that they may see a sea anemone and why.
This software is extremely
colorful and fun for students! It is education, but they feel like they
are simply having fun with the software. Some problems that may occur
when using this is that the students may end up doing more playing
around in the ocean than actually studying about the habitat. However,
I believe that simply getting to be able to explore and see what the
ocean is about from a different perspective has a great impact on the
student.
The Magic School Bus
Explores the Ocean

Published By: Microsoft
This is a fun program that is
easy to navigate through. The students will look through the ocean
activities and develop a drawing of the ocean floor, specifically
showing the sea anemone and their relationship to the other animals in
the ocean.
The software is simple to
navigate through. The kids will find it interesting because it explores
all of the animals possible in the ocean and not just anemone. Third
grade may think that this software is a little "too simple" for third
grade. Although simple, it represents all of the information that the
students need to learn more about anemone.
Sea Profiles: An Interactive
Journey of Ocean Exploration

Published By: Harbor Branch
Oceanographic Institution
This program focuses on the
waters of Florida, Bermuda, the Bahamas, and the Sargasso Sea. The
student can explore the ocean and check out the features that are
divided into five major sections: Ecosystems & Habitats, the
Physical Ocean, Migrations, Research Projects, and Research Methods.
The software is interesting
because of the real-life atmosphere it brings to the ocean floor. The
problems that may occur is that this software contains a lot of
information that may be too in depth for third graders.
Power Point

Published By: Microsoft
After students have completed
all three activities and are very knowledgeable about sea anemone, they
can use the Power Point program to develop a presentation in small
groups. They should compare and contrasts different types of anemone.
This software is nice in
order to form neat and organized presentations in an effective manner.
This program may be a little difficult for the student to use because
of the layout of the program.
Word

Published By: Microsoft
After students have completed
all three activities and are very knowledgeable about sea anemone, they
can use the Word program to develop a half a page report about sea
anemone that should parallel with their Power Point.
The Word program is easy to
use because the students most likely have used it before and are
comfortable using it and navigating through it. The only downfall is
that it could be "boring" for the students to work in Word.
I would like to thank all of the
contributing websites.
