Technology
Connection
Technologies that will be used in this lesson include: computer with
Internet
connection, a cultural graphic organizer displayed on the teacher’s web
site
with links to 3 websites that give information about the culture of the
country
in the multicultural children's literature book. Students
will use
the mouse to find information and view the websites selected by the
teacher.
Procedure:
Step One Introduction:
1. Show students the graphic organizer developed as a PowerPoint
slide.
Say: “Yesterday we read a book about Russia.”
Show them the globe and ask if anyone can find Georgia,
the US
and the place where the story took place, Russia.
2 Explain
to the students that we
are going to learn more about Russia.
3. Look at the graphic organizer (PowerPoint) and discuss the picture
representations of the culture that they will be learning about:
*National
Anthem, Buildings in Russia, and Holidays and gifts given in Russia
4 Read each culture question under the graphic
organizer (or
on the graphic organizer) and ask a student to click on the icon below
to find
the information
a. What is the national anthem for Russia?
b. Describe Russian buildings and what they are called.
c. What type of holidays are celebrated in Russia
and what gifts are given?
5. Go over the information on the web site with the
children, and
allow students to respond or make comments about what they see.
Allow students to take turns using the mouse to click on the links and
read
information or provide directions for them as they look at the web
sites
together.

Step Two Reinforcement Hands-On Activity
1. Tell the children:
Now that we have visited the website sites, and learned about the
culture we
are going to do an activity that relates to the culture of the people
in our
story.

The students will be given four Matryoshka dolls
with questions on their inside. Each of
the dolls, descend into smaller and smaller dolls.
Each of the questions will be asking about Russia. When the students get the answers correct,
they will be able to see the next doll. After
we answer all of the questions, we will discuss
Matryoshka dolls,
which is a common gift given during Russian holidays.
(Estimated
time 15 – 30 minutes depending on the
project)
(You will need to save the students’ pictures and projects, or take
pictures of
them in the activity. Avoid photographing their faces.
Later
you will add the
photos to your web page as examples of the children's work.
