It is important for children to learn about the many different types of landforms.  One of those landforms is the volcano.  The volcano is a dangerous yet amazing landform that catches the curiosity of many people.  It is important to know the dangers of a volcano. If one knows the dangers of a volcano, then one will be able to keep himself as safe as possible in the occurance of one erupting .

Activity 1

What Is A Volcano?
The students will explore a website to find out what a volcano is.  While exploring the website, they will be looking for answers to questions that will be given to them on a worksheet.

PLO - The students will be able to answer the question "What is a volcano?".


Materials - The students will need access to computers and the Internet to explore the website Weather Watch, computer paper, Microsoft Word

Procedures
  • The teacher will explain the rules and the procedures for computer use.
  • The students will go to their designated computer.  If there are not enough computers for each student, the class may be split up into groups.
  • The students will explore the website, WeatherWatch, to find out what a volcano is.
  • The students will be given a worksheet that contains questions that can be answered by researching the website WeatherWatch.
  • The students will type the answers to the worksheet on Microsoft Word.
 
Product: The students will know what a volcano is after exploring the website and completing the worksheet.

Activity 2

Problems That Occur Because Of Volcanoes
The students will explore websites to find the problems that occur due to volcanoes.  There are six different types of problems that the students will research.  They are: gas, landslides, tephra, lahars, lava flows, and pyroclastic flows.

PLO:  The students will state and define the problems that occur because of volcanoes by organizing the information on a spreadsheet.

Materials: 
The students will need access to computers and the Internet to explore the website USGS, computer paper, and Microsoft Excel

Procedures  
  • The teacher will explain the rules and the procedures for computer use.
  • The students will go to their designated computer.  If there are not enough computers for each student, the class may be split up into groups.
  • The students will go to the USGS website.
  • The students will find and describe the six different types of problems that occur due to volcanoes.
  • The students will organize the information on a spreadsheet using the Microsoft Excel program.
Product:  The students will take the information that they found about the problems caused by volcanoes on the website and organize it on a spreadsheet in Microsoft Excel.

Types of Volcanoes
The students will research the web and find the different types of volcanoes.

Materials:
The students will need access to computers and the Internet to explore the website Volcano World, computer paper, and Microsoft Word
Procedures  
  • The teacher will explain the rules and procedures for using the computers.
  • The students will go to their designated computers. (They students may be split up into groups.)
  • The students will go to the website Volcano World.
  • Once the students go to the website, they will click on "Teaching and Learning"
  • They will then click on "Types of Volcanoes"
  • The students will explore the six types of volcanoes and list five interesting facts about each type of volcano.
  • The information that the students find will by typed up on Microsoft Word.
Product:  The students will explore the website and find the different types of volcanoes.  The information will be typed up on Microsoft Word.
